Flannel Bedding

Flannel bedding is cotton with a brushed finish on both sides: The raised fibers create a layer of air that retains body heat and feels soft and cozy from the very first moment. biberna invented Biber bedding (brushed cotton flannel) in 1968. On this page you will find the entire Flannel family: classic fine Flannel in printed designs and the Melange flannel ("Flannel 2.0") that we developed in 2012 in our own weaving mill in Hamminkeln – all made from 100% cotton, washable at 60 °C and certified according to OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100.

Single pillowcases in 40x80 and 40x60 cm, for example the plain Melange flannel pillowcase matching many fine Flannel designs, can be found under Pillowcases.

Fine Flannel or Melange flannel?

Both provide almost the same warmth. Fine Flannel is the classic: more finely woven than coarse Flannel, printed with checks, stripes, flowers or children's motifs. Melange flannel is the further development: yarns of different colors are woven together, creating a vibrant, mottled color effect instead of a printed surface – more finely woven, softer to the touch, in 19 solid colors. Read the detailed comparison in the guide Flannel or Melange Flannel.

Why Flannel is ideal for winter

The brushed surface helps regulate temperature and absorbs moisture without becoming clammy – ideal for people who get chilly at night. At around 160 g/m², Flannel is significantly heavier than Renforcé or Linon and is therefore the winter quality choice among cotton fabrics. How warm Flannel really is compared to flannel is explained in the guide Biber Flannel or Flannel – Which Is Warmer?.

Sizes & Combinations

Our Flannel bedding is available in all common sizes – from the standard 135x200 cm, via the wide 155x200 cm variant and the 155x220 cm comfort size, to the extra-large 200x200 cm and Flannel children's bedding in 100x135 cm. You can find the right size in the guide Bedding Sizes Explained. To complement them, we have Flannel fitted sheets from our own weaving mill. Those who want to sleep cozily all year round can combine Flannel in winter with lightweight Seersucker or Linon for summer.

Care

Flannel is easy to care for and washable at 60 °C, although 40 °C is sufficient for everyday washing. Do not use fabric softener – it coats the brushed fibers and removes the fabric's loft. After the first wash, the surface becomes even fluffier. You can find all the tips in the guide Washing Flannel Bedding.

Flannel bedding as a gift: In the Gift Finder, Flannel bedding can be combined with a matching fitted sheet and pillowcases to create a gift set with a 19 to 26% set discount.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Flannel bedding?
Flannel is a densely woven cotton fabric that is brushed. The raised fibers retain heat and make the fabric fluffily soft. biberna invented this quality in 1968.

What is the difference between Flannel, fine Flannel and Melange flannel?
Fine Flannel is more finely woven than classic Flannel and is printed. Melange flannel (since 2012) is the further development made from yarns woven together in different colors – mottled instead of printed, even finer and softer. The warmth provided by all three is almost identical.

Is Flannel bedding available in 135x200?
Yes, 135x200 cm is the standard size and is available in almost all designs on this page. You can find the wider variant under 155x200 cm, and the longer one under 155x220 cm. The guide Flannel Bedding 135x200 explains which size is right for your duvet.

Does Flannel bedding scratch?
No. High-quality Flannel made from pure cotton is softly brushed and feels cozy, not scratchy. Scratchiness is usually caused by fabric softener or drying at too high a temperature.

Is biberna Flannel bedding made in Germany?
Melange flannel and our Flannel fitted sheets are made in our own weaving mill in Hamminkeln – from the weaving mill forecourt, through weaving and finishing, to garment construction. The printed fine Flannel sets are manufactured according to biberna specifications and inspected and shipped in Hamminkeln.

Who is Flannel bedding suitable for?
For anyone who likes to stay snug and warm in winter, as well as for those who get chilly, children and seniors. Those who sweat heavily are better off with Tencel, Seersucker or Linon.
