Heated blanket and under-bed heating: Which bedding is suitable – and which is better not to use?

A heated blanket or under-mattress heater shifts the warmth in bed downwards: it no longer comes from the duvet, but directly from the mattress. That is exactly why the bedding for a heated blanket often no longer works, even if it did before – many people suddenly wake up damp or still feel cold as soon as the device turns off. There is no blanket answer to this question: it depends on whether the heated blanket only preheats or runs continuously, how cold your bedroom is, and how much you sweat at night.

What a heated blanket does to your bedding

The heat source changes sides. Without a heated blanket, the bedding must retain body heat. With a heated blanket, heat is actively supplied – the role of the bedding shifts from warming to regulating. A very thick, heavily brushed quality can be too much of a good thing in this combination.

Moisture becomes the main issue. Supplied heat makes many people sweat more quickly. The key is whether the fabric absorbs moisture or leaves it on the skin. Cotton and the lyocell fiber TENCEL™ absorb moisture into the fiber; polyester qualities such as fleece, nicki, and microfiber hardly do. Over a heated blanket, this difference makes up most of the comfort.

Dry air and synthetic fibers do not get along. In winter, the indoor air is dry anyway. If you add a synthetic fiber set, the bedding builds up static charge more easily – you can feel it when you flick the duvet. Cotton is the calmer choice here.

The sheet is more important than the set. The fitted sheet lies directly over the under-mattress heater and absorbs what comes from above first. A smooth, thin sheet quickly passes the heat on, while a brushed cotton sheet buffers it and does not feel cold when you get into bed.

Bedding for a heated blanket: the comparison

Quality Properties over a heated blanket Ideal for Price range (set)
Melange flannel
e.g. item no. 0840500
100% cotton, fluffy and soft to the touch, absorbs moisture, hardly builds up static charge Heated blanket for preheating, then switched off from approx. €49.95
Fine flannel
e.g. item no. 0006722
Brushed cotton, lighter than biberna, provides noticeable warmth without overheating Cool bedrooms and moderate heat settings from approx. €25.95 (Castell) or €49.95 (biberna)
TENCEL™
e.g. item no. 0470500
Lyocell fiber, smooth and cool, absorbs moisture particularly well, washable at 40°C Heated blanket runs all night; sleepers who sweat from approx. €49.95
Fleece, nicki, microfiber 100% polyester, provides additional warmth, but hardly retains moisture and tends to build up static charge Only for dry sleepers in very cold rooms – otherwise rather unsuitable from approx. €20.95

Which quality is right for you?

You only preheat the bed and then switch it off.
This is the most common case – and here the bedding can be warm, because it must retain the heat after switching off. Choose the biberna Melange Flannel Bedding (item no. 0840500) from approx. €49.95. Melange flannel is woven from differently colored yarns instead of being printed, feels finer than classic biberna, and is made in our own weaving mill in Hamminkeln. You can find more designs in the Melange Flannel Collection.

The heated blanket runs continuously, and you wake up damp.
Then you no longer need warmth, but moisture management. The biberna Tencel Bedding (item no. 0470500) from approx. €49.95 absorbs moisture into the fiber instead of leaving it on the skin and is washable at 40°C. If you want to make do with one set all year round, you are in the right place in the TENCEL Collection.

The room is cold and the budget is tight.
Then a brushed cotton quality from the entry-level range is sufficient. The Castell Fine flannel Bedding Christmas Tree (item no. 0030986) from approx. €25.95 warms through its brushed surface, but remains lighter than heavy biberna – ideal when heat is already coming from below. Fine flannel sets are made according to biberna specifications. You can find a larger selection in the Biberna Collection.

You have the set, but the sheet feels cold.
Then it is not the bedding, but the fitted sheet. The biberna Fine flannel Fitted Sheet (item no. 0002744) from approx. €15.95 is brushed and feels immediately warmer when getting into bed than a smooth jersey sheet. If you want to continue the color of the set, choose the Melange Flannel Fitted Sheet (item no. 0841380) from approx. €23.95. Both are woven in our own weaving mill in Hamminkeln – the complete selection is available in the Biberna Fitted Sheet Collection.

What is often overlooked in this combination

The sheet must fit tightly. If the fitted sheet wrinkles, the heated blanket underneath will also wrinkle – the heat will be distributed unevenly, and noticeable creases will form at the edges. Check the pocket height of your sheet against the height of the mattress plus the under-mattress heater: a sheet that fitted before may become too short with the additional layer.

The manufacturer's instructions for the device take precedence. Under-mattress heaters may generally not be folded or operated under several thick layers. What can be placed between the device and the sleeper is stated in your device's manual – these instructions are more binding than any material recommendation.

More grams does not automatically mean better. Our biberna weighs in at 160 g/m² and is therefore the warmest cotton quality in the range. Over a continuously running heated blanket, this is too much for many sleepers – fine flannel or mélange flannel often hit the mark better.

Plan to wash more frequently. If you sleep with supplied heat, you will sweat more – the bedding needs to be washed accordingly more often. Follow the care label: TENCEL™ is designed for 40°C, while brushed cotton qualities can generally handle more. You should avoid fabric softener on brushed fabrics, because it flattens the fluff over time.

Frequently asked questions about bedding and heated blankets

Which bedding works best with a heated blanket?
A cotton or lyocell quality, because both absorb moisture. If the blanket only preheats, mélange flannel or fine flannel is suitable; if it runs continuously, TENCEL™ is usually more comfortable. Synthetic fiber qualities such as fleece or nicki provide additional warmth, but leave moisture on the skin.

Which fitted sheet belongs over an under-mattress heater?
A cotton sheet that fits tightly. Brushed qualities such as fine flannel feel warmer when getting into bed, while smooth jersey sheets pass the heat on more quickly. In both cases, the right pocket height is important so that the sheet remains wrinkle-free despite the additional layer.

Can I combine biberna bedding with a heated blanket?
Yes, this is especially useful in cold bedrooms or if the blanket is only used for preheating. If you sweat at night and the device runs continuously, a lighter quality is often the better choice – fine flannel instead of biberna, or TENCEL™.

Why does my bedding crackle since I started using a heated blanket?
This is almost always due to the fiber and dry indoor air. Polyester qualities build up static charge, while cotton does so significantly less. Regular airing and a humidity level of about 40 to 60 percent will also alleviate the problem.

Do I still need winter bedding if I have a heated blanket?
As soon as the device is switched off, the bed cools down through the duvet – then the warmth depends entirely on the bedding set again. If you do not let the blanket run continuously, you are much better off with a warm quality from the Winter Bedding Collection.

What are the shipping costs?
Nothing. We deliver all products free of charge within Germany – with no minimum order value.
