Flannel or fleece – which warm bedding is right for you?
Teilen
When the nights get colder, two qualities stand side by side on the shelf, both promising to be "cozy and warm" – yet they differ fundamentally. Flannel or fleece: one side is brushed cotton, the other a synthetic fluffy fabric. Which is the right one cannot be answered in one size fits all, because the two warm in completely different ways – and that is exactly what makes the difference for people who sweat at night, for allergy sufferers, and for everyone watching their budget.
What really matters for warm bedding
Warmth in bed is not created by the material itself, but by the air it traps. Both qualities can do this – but with different consequences for the sleeping climate. Three dimensions decide:
1. Warming behavior. Fleece feels warm in the first second because the surface barely releases heat. Flannel takes a moment longer, but then holds the warmth more evenly throughout the night.
2. Moisture management. This is the real sticking point. Cotton absorbs sweat and releases it to the outside without feeling clammy. Synthetic fibers absorb hardly any moisture – anyone who sweats at night will quickly lie damp under fleece.
3. Weight and feel. Flannel by biberna weighs around 160 g/m² and lies noticeably heavy and dense. Fleece is significantly lighter and softer-fluffier, but feels less "bed-firm".
Then there is the price question: Fleece belongs to our entry-level brand Castell, Flannel is the quality that biberna invented in 1968 and still produces today according to the original recipe.
Flannel or fleece: the direct comparison
| Criterion | Flannel (100% cotton) | Fleece (synthetic, Castell) |
|---|---|---|
| Feeling of warmth | evenly throughout the night | immediately noticeable when getting in |
| Moisture | absorbs sweat, stays dry to the touch | absorbs hardly any moisture |
| Weight | around 160 g/m², dense and heavy | light, voluminous |
| Skin feel | softly brushed, breathable | very soft, can build up static |
| Care | washable up to 60 °C, suitable for dryer | wash gently, low temperature |
| Ironing | not necessary | not necessary |
| Ideal for | Cold sleepers, allergy sufferers, warmth all night long | quick warmth, second bed, small budget |
| Price range | from €25.95 (Castell Fine flannel), from €49.95 (biberna) | from €20.95 |
In short: Fleece wins on first impression and price, Flannel on the sleeping climate over eight hours.
Which one is right for you?
You get cold, but also sweat at night sometimes. This is the most common case – and here there is no way around cotton. The brushed surface buffers moisture, so you neither cool down nor lie clammy. Our recommendation: the biberna Fine flannel Bedding Stripes in Storm Grey & Sage (Art. 0007253) from €49.95.
You want the softest thing we have. Then Melange-Flannel is the answer – our further development of Flannel, internally called "Flannel 2.0", made from 100% cotton and almost exclusively manufactured by us worldwide. Recommendation: the biberna Melange-Flannel Bedding (Art. 0840500) from €49.95, more colors in the Melange-Flannel Collection.
You are furnishing a guest or second bed. Here it counts that it is warm in case of need – not that it impresses for 300 nights a year. Fleece is therefore the most economically sensible choice. Recommendation: the Castell Thermo-Fleece Bedding (Art. 0360443) from €27.95.
You are looking for warmth at the lowest price. Then the Castell Polar-Fleece Bedding in Mint (Art. 0330250) for €20.95 is the entry point. If you want to get into cotton affordably instead, take the Castell Fine flannel Bedding in Blackberry (Art. 0301129) from €25.95 – around five euros more for a significantly better sleeping climate.
You can find an overview of all qualities in the Flannel Collection and in the Fleece Collection. You can see the entire selection for the cold season under Winter Bedding.
What is often overlooked
The care differs more than the price. Flannel withstands 60 °C – this is the deciding advantage for dust mite allergies, for children's beds, and after a cold. Fleece, on the other hand, should be washed gently and at a low temperature, because heat felts the nap. How to wash Flannel properly, read in the guide Washing Flannel Bedding.
Fabric softener is the enemy for both. It forms a film around the fibers and takes away exactly the fluffiness from the brushed surface that you bought it for. With fleece, it additionally increases the static charge.
Durability pays off. Fleece is cheaper to buy, but loses its nap faster. Well-equipped Flannel retains its fluffiness for years – even brushing and little residual shrinkage are the result of the experience that biberna has gathered with this quality since the invention in 1968. Calculated over the useful life, the price advantage often revolves around this.
Check the size before clicking. Both qualities are available in common dimensions; measure the blanket and pillow anyway, instead of relying on memories. Help with this is provided by the guide Bedding Sizes Explained.
And regardless of what you decide: At biberna we always deliver free of charge, without a minimum order value.
Frequently Asked Questions
What warms more, Flannel or Fleece?
In the first moment, Fleece feels warmer because the surface immediately returns body heat. Calculated over the whole night, Flannel holds the warmth more evenly because the brushed cotton forms a stable air cushion and releases moisture. Anyone who wants to lie warm all night will fare better with Flannel.
Which bedding is better if I sweat at night?
Definitely Flannel. Cotton absorbs sweat and releases it to the outside without becoming clammy. Fleece absorbs hardly any moisture, so it stays on the skin – this is the most common reason why Fleece bedding ends up back in the closet after a few nights.
Is Fleece suitable for allergy sufferers?
Only to a limited extent. The deciding factor for dust mite allergies is washability at 60 °C, and cotton offers this. Fleece should be washed gently and cooler, which makes the mite reduction less reliable. More on this in the guide Killing Dust Mites.
Does Flannel bedding scratch compared to Fleece?
No. High-quality Flannel is softly brushed and feels cozy. A rough feeling almost always comes from fabric softener, drying too hot, or poorly equipped cheap goods – not from the quality itself.
Is the surcharge from Fleece to Flannel worth it?
For the main bed, yes: The difference between Polar-Fleece from €20.95 and Castell Fine flannel from €25.95 is just a few euros, the difference in the sleeping climate is significantly greater. For a guest bed that is used a few nights a year, Fleece is completely sufficient.
Can I combine Flannel and Fleece?
Yes, and that is even a good solution for couples with different warmth requirements: two pillowcases in different qualities on one bed. A matching Flannel fitted sheet keeps the underside warm.
