Beige or Nicki: Which warm bedding suits your bedroom?

Warm bedding comes in two very different styles: Flannel is brushed and fluffy on both sides, while Nicki is velvety soft like fine velour. Both retain body heat in bed – but they feel completely different. Which quality is right for you depends less on pure warmth than on how you sleep, how often you wash, and how much you want to spend.

What really matters with warm bedding

The type of surface. Both qualities work on the same principle: a brushed cotton surface traps air, and this air is the actual heat reservoir. The difference lies in how the surface is created. With Flannel, the fabric is brushed, creating fine, short fibres across the entire surface. Nicki has a velvety pile made from brushed cotton loops – the surface is smoother, denser, and feels more like velvet than flannel.

The feeling when you get into bed. Flannel feels warm from the very first moment because the skin only touches the fibre tips and barely releases any heat to the surface. Nicki feels slightly cooler and smoother at first, but warms up quickly. Anyone who hates getting into a cold bed in December will notice this difference on the first night.

Moisture. Both qualities are made of cotton and absorb night sweats instead of leaving them on the skin. This is the decisive advantage over synthetic qualities such as fleece or microfibre, which may feel warm quickly but are less effective at wicking away moisture.

The price. Nicki is part of our entry-level brand, Castell, and a 135x200 cm set costs around €27.95. Flannel ranges from around €25.95 for Castell Fine Flannel to around €49.95 for a biberna set – a difference that is most noticeable in durability after many washes.

Flannel and Nicki compared

Quality Features Ideal for Price (135x200 cm)
Fine Flannel (e.g. 0030988, 0006722) brushed, fluffy, 100% cotton, instantly warm Cold bedrooms, children's rooms from approx. €25.95
Nicki (e.g. 0380339) Velvety cotton pile, smooth feel, temperature-regulating Those who like velvet and want warmth without the fluff from approx. €27.95
Melange Flannel (e.g. 0840500) Woven from differently coloured yarns, mottled, finer feel with the same warmth Those seeking Flannel warmth with a more elegant look from approx. €49.95

Which one is right for you?

Your bedroom is cold and you get chilly when getting into bed.
Choose Fine Flannel. The brushed surface on both sides gives an immediate feeling of warmth without having to turn up the heating. A good starting point is the Castell Fine Flannel Bedding Sapphire (0030988) from approx. €25.95.

You like velvety fabrics and prefer sleeping on smooth surfaces.
Then Nicki is the quality for you. The pile is denser and more even than Flannel, making the bedding feel less "woolly". The Castell Nicki Bedding Dove Blue (0380339) costs around €27.95 for the 135x200 cm set.

You want warmth, but Flannel quickly makes you feel too hot.
Choose Melange Flannel. This quality warms just as much as Flannel but feels finer and sits more lightly. The biberna Melange Flannel Bedding (0840500) from approx. €49.95 is woven in our own factory in Hamminkeln – from differently coloured yarns, mottled rather than printed.

The bedding should last for many years and be washed every week.
Then it is worth choosing biberna quality. The biberna Fine Flannel Bedding (0006722) from approx. €49.95 is designed for frequent washing and retains its loft significantly longer than cheap products from retailers.

What is often overlooked

The tumble dryer is your friend with both qualities. The movement in the drum lifts the fibres back up. Without a tumble dryer, the pile lies flatter after a few washes, and the bedding looks thinner than it actually is. Choose a gentle cycle and take the laundry out slightly damp.

Fabric softener ruins the effect. It coats the fibres in a film, clogs the brushed surface, and removes the loft you bought the bedding for. This applies to both Flannel and Nicki.

The sheet makes a difference too. You lie with your back directly on the fitted sheet all night. A warm cover on a smooth jersey sheet only provides half the effect. To match, we offer Flannel fitted sheets in coordinated solid colours.

Both will shed in the first few weeks. Loose fibres from the brushing process come away during the first few washes – this is normal and not a quality defect. It stops after three or four washes.

Frequently asked questions

Which warms more, Flannel or Nicki?
In regular use, there is little difference. Flannel feels warmer when you get into bed because the skin only touches the fibre tips. Nicki takes a few minutes longer, but then retains warmth just as reliably.

Is Nicki less scratchy than Flannel?
High-quality Flannel is not scratchy at all – a rough feeling is usually caused by fabric softener or drying at too high a temperature. Nicki feels smoother from the start due to its denser pile, which many people find more comfortable.

At what temperature should I wash both qualities?
40 °C is sufficient for normal use. 60 °C is advisable for house dust allergies or in case of illness; printed designs retain their colour for longer at 40 °C.

Is Nicki suitable for children's beds?
Yes, children generally like the velvety feel. However, many parents choose Fine Flannel for children's beds because it can be washed more often at 60 °C without losing its loft.

Can I combine Flannel and Nicki in the same bed?
Yes. Many couples with different warmth requirements do exactly this: Flannel on one side, Nicki on the other, and a shared sheet.

How long does warm bedding last?
With weekly washing, you can expect several years. The number of washes is less important than how you care for it: without fabric softener, in the tumble dryer on a gentle cycle, and not permanently at 60 °C.
