Jersey or flannel – which bedding do you really need in winter?

By the end of October, light summer bedding is still on the beds in many bedrooms, while the heating is already coming on in the evenings. Jersey or flannel is then the question that arises in front of the linen cupboard: both made of 100% cotton, both washable at 60 °C – and yet you sleep completely differently under them. It cannot be answered generally, because the right choice depends on your bedroom temperature, your warmth requirements, and how much effort the care can involve.

Jersey or flannel: What really matters when deciding

The surface. Flannel is cotton brushed. The raised fibers form a fine air cushion that keeps body heat in bed instead of letting it escape through the cover. biberna invented this quality in 1968 – it is still the core product of the company today. Jersey, on the other hand, is knitted instead of woven and not brushed: The knit fabric keeps you warm because it fits closely, not because it has a nap.

The fabric weight. Classic flannel is around 160 g/m², fine flannel depending on the design about 125 to 150 g/m². This makes flannel the heaviest and warmest cotton quality in the range. Jersey is lighter and therefore can be worn all year round – in high summer as well as in December, when the bedroom is heated.

The feel. Jersey gives like a soft T-shirt and hugs you. Those who turn around a lot at night or like it when the cover follows them find this pleasant. Flannel lies more quietly and flatter on the duvet – cozy, but not elastic.

The care. Jersey is non-iron; wrinkle creases smooth out by themselves through the knit structure. Flannel also does not need an iron, but no fabric softener: It coats the brushed fibers and takes away exactly the fluffiness for which you buy flannel.

The price. Jersey is a Castell quality at biberna and thus the cheaper entry. Flannel ranges from printed Castell fine flannel to Melange flannel from the company's own weaving mill.

By the way, Melange flannel does not keep you warmer than flannel, but equally warm – the difference is in the feel and the lively color image. It is woven in the company's own weaving mill in Hamminkeln. The printed fine flannel sets and the jersey qualities are manufactured according to biberna specifications, tested in Hamminkeln and shipped from there.

Which one is right for you?

You get cold at night, and the bedroom is hardly heated. Then there is no getting around flannel, and the finer version: The biberna Melange Flannel Bedding (0840500) from 49.95 € combines the full flannel warmth with a feel that feels closer to jersey than to coarse flannel. You can find all solid colors under Melange Flannel.

You want a set that you don't have to change again in April. Then jersey is the better choice. The Castell Jersey Bedding Titanium (0070732) from 29.95 € is a reversible bedding in two mottled gray tones – no pattern, but two moods in one set.

You generally do not iron, but the bed should still look neat. Here too jersey wins: The knit structure smooths wrinkles by themselves. The striped design Castell Jersey Gray (0070731) from 29.95 € remains smooth even after a restless night. The entire selection is under Jersey Bedding.

You want winter warmth, but without a big budget. Then you should go for printed fine flannel. The Castell Fine Flannel Bedding Christmas Tree (0030986) from 25.95 € is designed in gray instead of red and can therefore still be put on in January and February. Those looking for a quieter, year-round winter design are right with the biberna Fine Flannel Bedding (0006722) from 49.95 €. Both are under Flannel Bedding with all other designs.

What is often overlooked

The lifespan is decided by the care. Flannel does not lose its fluffiness through washing, but through fabric softener and drying too hot. Without both, the surface becomes even fluffier after the first wash. Jersey handles everyday life more easily, but stretches a little over the years if it regularly ends up in the dryer on a high setting.

The closure is not a detail. The mentioned jersey and Melange flannel sets are made in zipper fashion. This sounds minor, but it decides whether the duvet slips down in the cover at night – especially with a heavy winter duvet.

Don't forget the pillows. A pillowcase in 80x80 cm usually comes with the sets. Those who use a second pillow or the 40x80 cm format will find matching individual cases – fine jersey in a double pack as well as solid Melange flannel – under Pillowcases. Shipping is always free at biberna, without a minimum order value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does flannel really keep you noticeably warmer than jersey?
Yes. Flannel is brushed and with around 160 g/m² significantly heavier than jersey. The raised fibers hold an air cushion that jersey cannot build up by design.

Is jersey bedding warm enough in winter?
In a normally heated bedroom, yes, especially since jersey fits closely and feels warm immediately. In a cool or unheated room, however, you will notice the difference to flannel already on the first night.

Do I have to iron jersey or flannel?
Neither quality requires it. Jersey is non-iron due to the knit structure, flannel does not look smooth anyway due to the brushed surface – an iron would rather press the nap flat.

Does flannel bedding scratch?
High-quality flannel made of pure cotton is softly brushed and does not scratch. A rough feeling almost always comes from fabric softener or drying too hot, not from the material.

What is the difference between fine flannel and Melange flannel?
Fine flannel is printed, Melange flannel is made from differently colored woven yarns and is therefore mottled instead of printed. Melange flannel is finer in the weave and softer in feel; the warmth performance of both qualities is almost identical.

Can I combine both?
That is actually the most practical solution: jersey as a year-round set, flannel or Melange flannel for the cold months. You can find an overview of all warm qualities under Winter Bedding.
