Flannel or fleece: cotton or cozy synthetic fiber – which is right for your bed?
Teilen
When the bedroom gets chilly in November, two affordable options are particularly often on offer: premium flannel or fleece. Both promise warmth for under 30 euros, and both belong to our entry-level brand, Castell. But they feel completely different in bed – and that is exactly why the question cannot be answered with a simple blanket statement. It depends on how you sleep at night.
What really matters when making your choice
Three points make the difference, and none of them is the price.
1. How quickly should the bed get warm? Fleece warms you immediately when you get in, with no warm-up phase at all. The fluffy surface stores heat and releases it instantly. Brushed cotton, such as premium flannel, needs one or two minutes of body heat before the air pocket between the raised fibres starts to provide warmth. If you get into bed with cold feet and find those first few minutes uncomfortable, you will notice the difference every evening.
2. What happens to moisture? This is the more important point – and the one behind most wrong purchases. Everyone releases moisture at night. Premium flannel is made from 100% cotton and absorbs this moisture into the fibres, rather than leaving it on the skin. Fleece provides significantly less moisture buffering, but transports it away quickly and dries rapidly. If you get warm at night and tend to sweat, cotton will give you a more comfortable night's sleep.
3. How should the surface feel? Fleece is velvety and plush, almost like a blanket. Premium flannel is brushed and feels more like fabric, like soft, dense bedding. It is a matter of taste – but one you should know about beforehand.

What is often overlooked
Washing temperature. Premium flannel can be washed at 60°C and tumble dried – relevant for households with allergies and for guest beds that need to be washed hot occasionally. Fleece is easy-care, machine washable and non-iron, but is not designed for the same heat. If you want to wash hot for hygiene reasons, cotton gives you more flexibility.
Fabric softener. Please do not use it with premium flannel. It coats the fibres and slows down both: the fluffiness and the absorbency. Exactly the two properties for which you buy cotton flannel.
Static charge. High-quality fleece bedding is treated to be anti-static. If it still crackles, it is usually due to very dry heated air in the bedroom – what helps against this is explained in the guide Bedding can build up static electricity.
The combination. Many people don't have to choose at all, but rather switch: fleece during the coldest weeks, premium flannel for autumn, late winter and the transitional season. Two sets together cost less than one set in the premium range – and cover the whole winter. You can find more warm qualities in our Winter Bedding.
If both are not enough for you. Premium flannel is the lighter entry into warm cotton. If you prefer it denser and fluffier, you will end up with Fine Flannel at around 160 g/m² or Melange Flannel. You can read the three-way comparison in the article Premium Flannel, Melange Flannel or Fine Flannel.
Frequently Asked Questions
What warms more – premium flannel or fleece?
Fleece wins at first. It warms you immediately when you get in, with no warm-up phase. Over the course of the night, both even out because the air pocket in the brushed cotton fabric retains body heat. The noticeable difference is therefore less in the amount of warmth than in the timing.
Is premium flannel the same as Flannel?
No, but related. Both are brushed cotton fabrics. Flannel or Fine Flannel is denser and heavier, premium flannel is slightly lighter and cheaper. The fluffiness comes from the same technique that biberna has stood for since the invention of Flannel bedding in 1968.
Which quality is better for children?
For children who wriggle around a lot and get warm quickly, premium flannel is usually the calmer choice, because cotton absorbs moisture and can be washed at 60°C. In a very cold children's bedroom, fleece can still be more comfortable – but then combine it with a lighter duvet.
Does fleece bedding pill?
Every fluffy surface loses some loose fibres at the beginning, which settles after the first few washes. Wash it inside out and without coarse textiles such as jeans or towels in the same drum, then the fibres will stay even for longer.
What sizes are available?
Premium flannel comes as a set in 135x200 cm with an 80x80 cm pillowcase. Fleece is available in 135x200 cm, 155x220 cm and other sizes – you can find the right size directly in the respective collection.
