Buying Bedding: The Checklist for Making the Right Choice

The bedding market is large, and anyone looking to buy bedding will quickly find themselves facing many questions: Which material is right for my sleep needs? Which size is the right one? And how can I tell what good quality really looks like? As a manufacturer with our own weaving mill in Hamminkeln, we at biberna know every step from yarn to finished cover – and here we provide you with a compact checklist to help you choose bedding that is truly right for you.

Material first: Which quality is right for you?

The most important decision when buying bedding is the material, because it largely determines how warm or cool, soft or textured your bed feels. If you like it cozy and warm, our core product Flannel with around 160 g/m² of fluff is the right choice – our most popular product since 1968. If you want it even softer, Melange Flannel, our own further development of the Flannel quality, offers a particularly gentle alternative. For warm nights, airy qualities such as seersucker or muslin are ideal, while Mako Satin with its 4/1 sateen weave feels cool and smooth against the skin. You can find a complete overview of all fabric types in our guide to bedding fabric types.

Natural fiber or synthetic fiber?

Cotton qualities such as Flannel, Mako Satin, or Renforcé impress with their breathability and skin-friendly properties. Synthetic fiber qualities from our Castell brand, such as microfiber or cooling bedding, score points with special functions such as a cooling effect on hot nights – at a particularly affordable entry price.

Correctly understanding GSM, weave, and thread count

Many figures on packaging sound more important than they actually are. GSM (g/m²) describes the fabric's surface weight and gives a rough indication of density and warmth – our Flannel is around 160 g/m². The type of weave, i.e. how the threads are interwoven, influences the feel and sheen: sateen weave gives Mako Satin its suppleness, while plain weave provides durability. And even a high thread count alone says little if the yarn quality and weave are not right. You can read more about this in our articles on bedding GSM and bedding weave types.

Size, closure, and features

In addition to the material, the right size determines sleep comfort. Measure your mattress and pillow before ordering – especially with extra-large beds or unusual dimensions, a closer look is worthwhile. Also pay attention to high-quality zippers that securely close the cover and prevent the filling from shifting. You can find details on making the right choice in our guides to bedding covers and pillowcases.

Origin and quality: Why manufacturing matters

It is also worth taking a look at the origin. At biberna, we have operated our own weaving mill in Hamminkeln since 1932 – we know weaving, dyeing, and garment making firsthand. This sets us apart from many providers who buy qualities without knowing the production process themselves. This means we offer you original quality directly from the manufacturer, without going through retail. Read more about this in our posts on Made in Germany and original quality directly from the manufacturer. You can find our entire range of bedding in the bedding category, and our classic Flannel products in the Flannel bedding collection.

Frequently asked questions

How many bedding sets should I own?
For a convenient rotation, we recommend at least two to three sets per bed, ideally for different seasons.

Is more expensive bedding really worth it?
High-quality, carefully manufactured qualities usually last significantly longer, retain their shape and color better, and feel more comfortable against the skin than cheap products.

Which material is suitable for the whole year?
Renforcé is considered a versatile all-rounder for every season, while Flannel shines in winter and seersucker or Mako Satin in summer.

With this checklist, you will make an informed decision when buying bedding – tailored to the material, dimensions, and your personal sleeping habits. If you have questions about individual qualities, we are happy to help.
