A duvet cover is more than just a cover for your duvet – it determines the sleeping climate, feel, and look of your bedroom. Three factors play the main role when choosing: the right size, the right material for your personal warmth perception, and a well-thought-out closure. As a family business with our own weaving mill in Hamminkeln, we at biberna know all three points from decades of experience – here we summarize what matters.
The right size for your duvet cover
A duvet cover must fit the duvet, not the mattress. The most common dimensions in Germany are 135x200 cm for single beds and 155x220 cm or 200x200 cm for double beds, with 240x220 cm also available in larger sizes. If the cover is too tight, the duvet slips during the night and forms creases; if it is too large, the filling bunches up in one corner and warms unevenly. You can find a detailed overview of all common dimensions and how to determine the right size for your bed in our guide to duvet sizes. For box spring beds and wider double beds, the larger size is generally recommended to ensure there is enough room when turning the duvet in your sleep.
Material determines sleep comfort
In addition to size, the material is the second key decision when choosing a duvet cover – it determines how warm or cool, how soft or textured the cover feels during the night.
Flannel for cozy warmth
Our 160 g/m² Flannel has been our customers' favorite material since 1968 – brushed, very fluffy, and therefore pleasantly warm. A Flannel duvet cover is particularly suitable for the cooler months and for anyone who gets cold quickly at night. You can find the right qualities in our Flannel collection.
Mako satin for cool elegance
If you prefer it cool and smooth all year round, choose Mako satin: combed cotton in a 4/1 sateen weave that feels silky smooth without looking "shiny" like ordinary satin. A Mako satin duvet cover also looks elegant and is well suited for bedrooms with a high-quality look. Find out more in our Mako satin collection. If you want to switch between seasons, you will find the right selection in our entire bedding range.
Closure: what to look for when choosing a duvet cover
An often underestimated detail is the closure of the duvet cover. A high-quality, full-length zipper keeps the duvet securely in the cover, prevents slipping, and makes it significantly easier to put on than a button placket. At biberna, we deliberately use high-quality zippers that continue to function reliably even after many washes. Read about the specific everyday advantages of a good zipper in our article Duvet covers with zippers.
Frequently asked questions
Which duvet cover size fits my duvet?
The duvet cover should match the exact dimensions of your duvet, not the mattress. For sets with pillowcases, also pay attention to a suitable pillowcase size; find out more in our pillowcase guide.
Is Flannel or Mako satin the better choice?
It depends on your warmth perception: Flannel provides more warmth and is suitable for cold nights, while Mako satin is cooler, smoother, and can be used all year round.
Why is a zipper better than buttons?
A full-length zipper keeps the duvet more evenly in the cover, prevents slipping, and makes it faster and easier to put on than a button placket.
