Throw blanket or second duvet – what really belongs on the bed?
Teilen
As the nights get cooler, the same question arises in almost every household: You need an extra layer at night – but is a throw over the bed enough, or do you need a second duvet?
It’s not possible to give a blanket answer, because both solutions solve different problems. One is a flexible extra layer, the other a permanent commitment to more warmth. Which one is right for you depends on four specific factors. What really matters when making the decision
How often do you need the extra warmth? If you only get cold during the transitional season and on occasional cold nights, a throw is the better choice: it can be placed on the bed when needed and otherwise lie on the sofa. A second duvet, on the other hand, is only worth it if the extra layer is used every night for months.
Do both sleepers get cold in the same way? The classic couple’s problem – one person sweats while the other pulls the duvet up to their chin – is solved more elegantly by a throw. It warms exactly one side of the bed without making the partner too warm.
How often will it be washed? A throw can easily go into the washing machine when needed, but a bulky duvet rarely can, and only in larger drums. If you have pets on the bed or sweat heavily at night, you should take the question of care seriously.
Should the solution also be visually appealing? A throw is part of the décor during the day, while a second duvet disappears under the duvet cover. If you want the bed to look nicely made in the morning, a throw gives you both.
Throw or second duvet: a direct comparison
| Option | Features | Ideal for | Price range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sherpa / teddy fleece throw | Very high warmth with low weight, dense pile, soft feel | Chilly people, cold feet, TV evenings and cold nights | approx. €40–90 |
| Melange throw (cotton) | Natural feel, breathable, subtle mélange look | Year-round use, bed and sofa in one | approx. €70 |
| Light summer duvet (muslin) | Airy, thin, easy to wash | Warm nights, naps, children’s rooms | approx. €30 |
| Second duvet | Permanent level of warmth, disappears under the duvet cover, requires storage space | People who are always cold, unheated bedrooms | varies greatly depending on the filling |
| Warmer bedding instead of an extra layer | Fluffy Biber flannel or flannel duvet cover, keeps the existing duvet warmer | Those who don’t want an extra layer but need more warmth | from approx. €50 |
The table shows the real point: Between a “throw” and a “second duvet” lies a third option – simply making the existing duvet warmer. Most people overlook this.
Which solution is right for you?
You only get cold at your feet and only during the transitional season. Then you don’t need a second duvet, but a short, dense extra layer over the foot of the bed. The biberna Sherpa throw (0229209), item number 0229209/002/099/001, provides plenty of warmth with little weight thanks to its dense Sherpa pile – and can go back on the sofa during the day.
You and your partner have completely different warmth requirements. In this case, a throw on one side of the bed is the perfect solution, because it doesn’t heat up the entire sleeping area. The biberna Melange throw (0837476), item number 0837476/017/099/001, is our recommendation for this: cotton in a mélange look, breathable enough so that the warmer side doesn’t make you sweat.
Your bedroom is permanently cool and you get cold every night. Then a targeted extra layer is the wrong solution – it’s worth starting with the bedding before buying a second duvet. The biberna Melange Flannel Bedding (0840500), item number 0840500/017/001/001, is our further development of the classic flannel quality: even fluffier, 100% cotton, and it keeps the warmth of the existing duvet noticeably closer to the body. You can find other warm qualities in the Flannel Bedding.
You want a duvet that stays on the bed in summer as well as winter. For warm nights, Sherpa is too much. The biberna Muslin Summer Duvet (0480100), item number 0480100/001/099/001, is airy enough to stay on the bed in summer and can be washed without any problems. If you prefer a duvet with two sides, the biberna Doubleface Throw (0229038) offers two colour sides in one piece.
What is often overlooked
The size determines the usefulness. A throw that fits across the foot of the bed fulfils its purpose on the bed. If it is to cover one person completely, it must be significantly larger – otherwise you will constantly be pulling it up at night. Check the dimensions in the respective product description before ordering.
Care clearly distinguishes the qualities. Duvets with a high pile – Sherpa and teddy fleece – should be washed at a low temperature and without fabric softener so that the pile remains fluffy. Cotton qualities such as mélange or muslin tolerate the washing machine much better. How to keep the pile fluffy for longer can be found in our guide Washing a throw without flattening the pile.
Durability depends on the workmanship, not the volume. A thick duvet made from thin yarn loses its volume after a few washes. Pay attention to neat edges and a dense underside – that is what determines whether the duvet still looks like it did on the first day after two winters.
The price says little about the quality of a duvet. Because we deliver directly to you, you pay biberna’s original quality without any middleman – and every order is shipped free of charge, with no minimum order value. You can find the complete overview in our Throw Collection and under Sherpa.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a throw completely replace a duvet?
During the transitional season and in well-heated bedrooms, yes; permanently in winter, probably not. A throw warms through its pile, while a duvet provides additional warmth by trapping air. As a sole duvet, it is most likely to work for people who already sleep warm.
What warms more – Sherpa or teddy fleece?
Both use a dense pile and provide very similar warmth. Sherpa has a slightly coarser, sheepskin-like texture and therefore appears bulkier, while teddy fleece is more finely curled and feels smoother. The decision is a matter of feel, not warmth.
Doesn’t a throw slip off the bed at night?
When placed across the foot of the bed, it stays stable because it can be tucked under the mattress edge on both sides. As a top duvet for one person, it slips more easily – in that case, a larger duvet is the better choice because more material falls over the edge of the bed.
Is warmer bedding enough instead of a second duvet?
Often, yes. A flannel or mélange flannel duvet cover significantly changes the perception of warmth because the brushed pile lies directly against the skin. Those who currently sleep with smooth cotton often gain enough warmth from this to save themselves the second duvet.
Which throw is suitable for a children’s room?
Light cotton qualities have the advantage here because they are breathable and tolerate frequent washing well. A muslin summer duvet fulfils this purpose year-round, while a Sherpa throw is more suitable as a cosy blanket for the sofa than for covering a child at night.
Does the throw go under or over the duvet?
Over the duvet. Underneath, it compresses the filling and takes away its warming air volume – the effect then partially reverses.
