The fitted sheet keeps slipping – four causes and what really helps

In the morning, the fitted sheet is bunched up in the middle of the bed, one corner has come loose, and the mattress is exposed. If your fitted sheet slips, it is almost never the bed's fault and almost always due to one of four causes—and which one applies to you depends on your mattress, your sleeping habits, and the age of the sheet. That is why there is no one-size-fits-all answer: what works for a 30 cm high box spring mattress is exactly the wrong solution for an 8 cm flat topper.

What really matters: the four causes

1. The pocket height does not match the mattress. The pocket is the surrounding edge that extends down past the edge of the mattress. If it is too short, the sheet pulls at the corners with every movement—until one comes loose. Standard fitted sheets from biberna are designed for mattresses up to around 25 cm high. From 25 cm upwards, you need a box spring model, while for toppers under 12 cm, a particularly shallow one is required.

2. The size is too large. Many people "prefer to buy one size larger" to ensure a secure fit. The opposite happens: the elastic around the edge has nothing left to grip, the sheet lies loosely and shifts. Fitted sheets are elastic—they are designed to fit tightly, not hang loosely.

3. The elastic has stretched out. Elastic ages, especially due to heat. If you wash at 60 degrees and tumble dry for years, it will eventually lose its elasticity. A sheet that used to stay in place but now slips usually has exactly this problem—no clip can fix it.

4. The fabric has too little elasticity. Woven fabrics such as biberna or percale offer very little stretch. Knitted fabrics such as jersey and fine jersey stretch in all directions and fit more closely around the edge of the mattress. If you toss and turn in bed, a knitted fabric will make a noticeable difference.

Which fitted sheet is right for you?

You have a box spring bed or a mattress over 25 cm high. This is the most common case—and the most common reason for buying the wrong sheet. Choose the biberna Jersey-Elastic-Boxspring fitted sheet (Art. 0077640) from €39.95, with a pocket height of 35–50 cm. It still securely grips underneath the core even with a 40 cm high mattress.

You sleep on a topper. A standard sheet will bunch up on the thin layer and create wrinkles. The biberna Jersey-Elastic-Topper fitted sheet (Art. 0077641) from €28.95 has a pocket height of only 15–20 cm and lies flat on toppers 7–12 cm high.

You sweat at night and toss and turn. In this case, moisture works against the grip: a damp sheet slips more easily. The biberna Terry-Stretch fitted sheet (Art. 0012344) from €21.95 absorbs the most moisture through its loop structure and has a generous 35 cm pocket.

You have a standard bed and simply want it to look neat. The biberna Fine Jersey fitted sheet (Art. 0077144) from €20.95 is the understated year-round solution: finely knitted, smooth, and non-iron. If you want a more affordable option, choose the biberna Jersey fitted sheet (Art. 0077155) from €13.95. You can find the full selection under Jersey Fitted Sheets.

What is often overlooked

Measure correctly instead of guessing. Note down the width, length and height of your mattress—the height determines the pocket height and is almost always forgotten. For box spring beds, measure the part that is actually covered, i.e., the mattress plus the topper, if both fit under one sheet.

The base layer counts too. A smooth plastic surface lacks friction. A molton pad under the fitted sheet provides grip while also protecting the mattress, without costing you a millimeter of comfort.

Proper care preserves elasticity. Our fitted sheets can be washed at 60 °C and tumble-dried—but that does not mean every wash has to be hot. If you usually wash at 40 degrees and dry gently, the elastic will last significantly longer. Find out more in our Care Tips.

Quality is decided before the first wash. We have been based in Hamminkeln since 1932 and still operate our own weaving mill today—as a manufacturer, we know every sheet down to the last detail. You won't notice how tightly the elastic is sewn in or how much elasticity the knitted fabric has in the shop, but after the twentieth wash. Frequently Asked Questions

Do fitted sheet clips or clips help?
They are a temporary fix and only address the symptom. If the pocket height is wrong or the elastic has stretched out, the clip merely pulls the tension to a different spot—often causing the fabric to tear there. A sheet with the correct pocket height is a more sustainable solution.

My sheet used to stay in place, but now it slips—why?
Almost always the elastic. It loses its elasticity due to heat, fabric softener, and many wash cycles. Replacing it is usually more worthwhile than any attempt at repair.

Can I adapt a fitted sheet that is too large?
Only to a limited extent. You can shorten the elastic and sew it back in, but the amount of fabric remains the same—the folds will then migrate to the middle of the bed. It is better to choose the right size from the start.

Does jersey slip less than biberna?
Generally, yes. Jersey and fine jersey are knitted and stretch in all directions, while woven biberna offers significantly less stretch. On the other hand, biberna provides better warmth in winter—the Fine flannel-Stretch fitted sheet (Art. 0002542) is a good compromise.

What pocket height do I need for a 30 cm high mattress?
A box spring model with a 35–50 cm pocket, i.e., the Jersey-Elastic-Boxspring fitted sheet (Art. 0077640). Standard sheets up to 25 cm will only fit tightly around the edge of a 30 cm mattress and will come loose at the first turn.

Are there suitable fitted sheets for 120 x 200 cm?
Yes, in two stretchy jersey fabrics—see Fitted Sheets 120 x 200 cm. This intermediate width is not available in biberna or terry.
