Terry cloth, jersey or flannel: Which fitted sheet for which season?
Teilen
Most people change their bedding twice a year – the fitted sheet often remains the same. Yet this very sheet lies directly on the mattress and is therefore closer to the skin than any cover. There is no one-size-fits-all answer as to which fitted sheet is right for which season: it depends on whether you sweat or feel cold at night, how high your mattress is, and how often the sheet needs to go in the washing machine. This comparison shows where terry, jersey, and flannel each have their strengths.
The four dimensions of decision-making
Four points determine which material ends up beneath you – and price is not one of them:
- The feeling of warmth when getting into bed. A brushed flannel sheet feels warm from the very first moment, terry cozy and textured, jersey smooth and neutral. For many people, this first moment is the deciding factor – especially in winter, when the bed is cold.
- Moisture absorption. Anyone who sweats at night needs a sheet that draws moisture away instead of leaving it on the surface. Terry can do this best with its loops, flannel also does a good job with its brushed cotton surface, while jersey is more reserved.
- The mattress height. The most common problem is not a material issue. A sheet with a pocket that is too shallow will ride up at the corners, no matter how good the fabric is. High mattresses, toppers, and box spring beds need an elastic version.
- The washing frequency. A sheet in a child's bed or a guest room is used differently than one in the main bedroom. The more often it is washed, the more important temperature resistance and dryer suitability become.

Which one is right for you?
You dislike lying on a cold sheet in winter. Then flannel is the answer. The brushed surface feels warm from the very first moment because it traps air – not a material that generates warmth, but a structure that retains your own body heat. Choose the biberna Fine Flannel Fitted Sheet (0002744). To complement this, it is worth taking a look at our guide Cold Feet in Bed.
You wake up damp at night – all year round. Here, it is not the season that matters, but moisture absorption. The biberna Terry Stretch Fitted Sheet (0012344) absorbs moisture in its loops, retains its shape thanks to its elastic content, and can be washed at 60 °C. For a sheet that needs to go in the washing machine more often, this is the deciding factor.
You want a sheet for spring and summer that simply works. Then the biberna Jersey Fitted Sheet (0077155) is enough. Smooth, non-iron, temperature-neutral – it does not add warmth or actively cool, but simply remains unobtrusive. If you prefer it even smoother, choose the biberna Fine Jersey Fitted Sheet (0077144).
You sleep in a box spring bed or on a mattress with a topper. Then it is not the material that matters, but the pocket. The biberna Jersey Elastic Box Spring Fitted Sheet (0077640) is designed exactly for this. If you also want the flannel feel there in winter, choose the biberna Fine Flannel Stretch Fitted Sheet (0002542).
What is often overlooked
The pocket height, not the mattress surface. The surface dimensions are on every package, but the maximum mattress height is rarely listed. Measure your mattress including the topper and add a few centimeters. A sheet that rides up at the corners almost always fails because of the pocket – not the fabric. Find out more in our guide Choosing the Right Pocket Height & Dimensions.
Care differs depending on the quality. Terry can withstand 60 °C and can go in the dryer – the loops even stand up again there. Depending on the item, wash jersey at 40 to 60 °C and you do not need to iron it. Flannel should be washed more gently to preserve its softness; pull the sheet slightly damp and it will smooth itself out.
The elastic determines the durability. It is not the fabric of a fitted sheet that gives out first, but the elastic. Our flannel sheets and Biber flannel products are made in Hamminkeln – fully integrated in-house, from the weaving mill to the finishing. We produce jersey and terry stretch according to biberna specifications. This is why a sheet still has the same tension after thirty washes as it did at the beginning.
What lies beneath the sheet matters too. A fitted sheet does not protect the mattress. If you want to keep stains and moisture away from the mattress, place a molton pad underneath – we explain the correct order in Fitted Sheet or Molton Pad on the Mattress.
We deliver all orders within Germany free of charge, with no minimum order value – regardless of the order value and for every product.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to change the fitted sheet according to the season?
You do not have to, but it is often worth it. If you feel cold in winter, you will immediately notice the difference between a smooth jersey sheet and a brushed flannel sheet when getting into bed. If you sleep the same way all year round, you can easily stick to one quality – then jersey or terry stretch is the more practical choice.
Does a flannel fitted sheet really feel noticeably warmer?
Yes, but not because it generates warmth. The brushed surface traps air, and this layer of air retains your own body heat. That is why a flannel sheet feels warm from the very first minute, while a smooth sheet initially feels cool.
Do you sweat under flannel?
Generally no, because it is made of cotton and the fibers absorb and release moisture. It only becomes problematic in summer if a warm blanket is added. If you sweat heavily, terry stretch or jersey will serve you better all year round.
Which fitted sheet is right for children's beds?
Terry stretch, if you expect minor mishaps at night: absorbent and designed for 60 °C. In winter, a fine flannel sheet (0002744) is the warmer alternative – the quality is also available in children's sizes.
Can I put flannel sheets in the dryer?
In principle yes, but on a low setting and without over-drying. The softness will last longer if the sheet comes out of the dryer slightly damp and dries on the mattress overnight. If in doubt, check the care label of the respective item.
What is the difference between jersey and fine jersey?
Both are smoothly knitted cotton; fine jersey is more finely made and therefore appears smoother and calmer in appearance. There is hardly any difference in how warm they feel – the decision is more a matter of feel and budget.
