Melange flannel or fleece: Which winter bedding is right for you?
Teilen
Both qualities promise the same thing: warmth as soon as you get into bed. However, they achieve it in completely different ways – one through brushed cotton, the other through polyester. Whether melange flannel or fleece is the right winter bedding for you depends less on the feeling of warmth than on your sleep environment, your washing machine, and who sleeps in the bed.
What really matters when deciding
Four points make the difference in practice – and none of them is "warmer or less warm".
1. The fiber and what it does with moisture. Melange flannel is brushed cotton on both sides, 100% and certified according to OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100. Cotton absorbs moisture and releases it again – if you sweat a little at night, you will notice it. Fleece, on the other hand, is 100% polyester. It absorbs hardly any moisture, transports it further along the surface, and therefore dries extremely quickly. For dry sleepers, this is not a disadvantage, but for people with night sweats, it is.
2. The washing temperature. Melange flannel can go into the machine at 60 °C, fleece at 40 °C. This may sound like a minor detail, but it is the hardest difference in everyday life: dust mites are only reliably killed at 60 °C, and even with children's beds and accidents, the higher temperature is more reassuring.
3. Weight and feel. Melange flannel has noticeable substance and falls heavily over the body – the rich, enveloping feeling of classic winter bedding. Fleece is feather-light and still warms immediately. Those who find the weight of the blanket pleasant will experience fleece as too "fleeting"; those who want to feel nothing will experience it exactly the opposite way.
4. The budget. Here the two worlds are furthest apart: fleece sets start at around €20.95, mélange flannel at around €49.95. The difference is not a brand premium, but the difference between a woven cotton fabric from our own production and a polyester quality from the entry-level brand Castell.
Melange flannel or fleece: a direct comparison
Three qualities compete in the range – mélange flannel as well as thermo- and polar-fleece from Castell.
| Quality | Properties | Ideal for | Price range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Melange flannel | 100% cotton, brushed, woven from differently colored yarns (mottled instead of printed), OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100, zipper finish, washable at 60 °C | Cool bedrooms, night sweats, allergy sufferers, anyone who wants to keep a quality for many winters | approx. €49.95–64.95 depending on size |
| Thermo-fleece (Castell) | 100% polyester, densely woven, very warm, feather-light, shape-stable even after many washes, washable at 40 °C, do not iron | Cold, dry bedrooms, guest beds, second set for the deepest winter | from approx. €27.95 |
| Polar-fleece (Castell) | 100% polyester, light, soft brushed surface, warms immediately, dries quickly, washable at 40 °C, do not iron | Children's beds, frequent washing, small budget | from approx. €20.95 |
One point that the table does not show: mélange flannel does not fundamentally warm differently than classic biberna flannel – we introduced the quality in 2012 as a further development of our 1968 flannel, finer in the weave and more vivid in the color image. It is woven, dyed, and finished in our own weaving mill in Hamminkeln, fully in Germany. The Castell fleece qualities are manufactured according to biberna specifications, tested and shipped in Hamminkeln.
Which one is right for you?
You wake up clammy at night or sweat under warm bedding. Then fleece is the wrong direction: polyester does not absorb the moisture, it remains between the skin and the fabric. Take mélange flannel, for example, the biberna Melange-Flanell Bedding (0840500) – solid mottled in 19 colors, in the sizes 135×200, 155×200, 155×220 and 200×200 cm.
You are looking for bedding for a child's bed and wash often. Here polar-fleece plays to its strengths: light, immediately warm, quickly dry and ready to use again without an iron. The Castell Polar-Fleece Bedding – Mother-of-Pearl (0330248) with a jungle motif in 135×200 cm plus pillowcase 80×80 cm costs around €20.95. If 60 °C is more important to you than the price, then opt instead for the biberna Melange-Flanell Children's Bedding Zoo Animals (0840520).
Your bedroom is cold, but dry – and you want to feel nothing on the blanket. This is the case for thermo-fleece. The Castell Thermo-Fleece Bedding (0360443) is available in 135×200 and 155×220 cm, each with a pillowcase 80×80 cm, from around €27.95.
You react to house dust. Then the washing temperature decides, not the look. Mites survive a 40-degree wash; only 60 °C reliably kills them. Melange flannel is the only one of the three qualities that does this – you will find all colors in the Melange-Flanell Bedding collection.
What is often overlooked
Neither quality needs ironing. Brushed surfaces hide wrinkles by themselves, fleece is naturally wrinkle-free. This is one of the reasons why warm winter bedding is often less complicated in everyday life than smooth summer qualities.
Polyester charges up statically more easily in winter. Dry heating air and synthetic fiber are a combination that crackles and sometimes produces small sparks. What helps against this, we have summarized in Bedding charges up statically.
Brushed qualities pill at the beginning. In the first few weeks, loose fiber ends come loose from the brushing process – normal, and gone after a few washes. Details on this in Flannel bedding pills and pilling.
Durability pays off differently than the price suggests. A fleece set for €20.95 is cheaper than a mélange flannel set for €49.95 – calculated over several winters, the ratio reverses, if the cotton quality stays fluffy longer. Which quality lasts longer for you depends above all on how often and how hot it is washed.
Shipping is always free with us – without a minimum order value, for all products within Germany. Ordering a single children's bedding set is therefore just as worthwhile as the big winter shopping trip. An overview of all warm qualities is given by the Winter Bedding collection, the pure polyester qualities can be found under Fleece Bedding.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does fleece warm more than mélange flannel?
At first glance, yes – fleece feels warm immediately because polyester releases hardly any heat. Over the whole night, both even out. The noticeable difference lies more in the weight: mélange flannel lies heavier, fleece remains feather-light.
Can I wash fleece bedding at 60 °C?
No. Both Castell fleece qualities are designed for 40 °C. Higher temperatures can cause the polyester fibers to felt, the nap then loses its softness. If you want to wash regularly at 60 °C, mélange flannel is the right choice.
Does fleece bedding charge up statically?
This can happen in winter because heating air is dry and polyester discharges charge worse than cotton. Higher humidity in the bedroom and avoiding dryer cycles at high heat significantly reduce the effect.
Is mélange flannel the same as biberna flannel?
Not quite. Melange flannel belongs to the biberna flannel family, but is the further development created in 2012: finer in the weave, mottled instead of printed, softer to the touch. In terms of warming performance, they are equal.
Which quality is better for children?
That depends on what is more important to you. Polar-fleece scores points with price, low weight, and fast drying – practical if changed several times a week. Melange flannel scores points with cotton directly on the skin and a 60 °C washing temperature.
How often should I change winter bedding?
The rule of thumb is about two weeks, with night sweats or allergies rather weekly. Because fleece dries so quickly, it is easier to maintain a tight changing rhythm – provided that 40 °C is sufficient for you.
