Anyone looking for a new fitted sheet will quickly come across two terms: Jersey and Fine Jersey. Both are made of cotton, both are stretchy – and yet there is a crucial difference. We explain what lies behind them and which fitted sheet is right for you.

What is a Jersey Fitted Sheet?

Jersey is a classic knitted fabric made of carded cotton fibers. During carding, the cotton fibers are combed and aligned, but shorter fibers remain in the yarn. The result is a solid, robust fabric that stands out for its good stretchability.

The biberna Jersey fitted sheet is the ideal everyday choice: durable, easy to care for, and comfortable for daily use. A product that simply works reliably – year after year.

  • Carded 100% cotton
  • Solid basic quality for everyday use
  • Good stretchability for a secure fit
  • Easy to care for and durable

What is a Fine Jersey Fitted Sheet?

Fine Jersey takes it one step further. Here, combed ring yarn made of 100% cotton is used. During combing, all short fibers are removed again after carding, so that only the long, even fibers remain. These are then spun into a particularly fine, even ring yarn.

The result: a fabric that feels significantly softer, smoother, and higher quality. The biberna Fine Jersey fitted sheet is our premium choice for anyone who does not want to compromise on sleep.

  • Combed ring yarn made of 100% cotton
  • Particularly soft and smooth
  • Even, fine fabric
  • Premium quality with a noticeable difference

Which Fitted Sheet Is Right for Me?

Jersey is the right choice if you are looking for a reliable, robust fitted sheet for everyday use – for example in a children's room or as a second set. Quality without compromise, at a reasonable price.

Fine Jersey is recommended if a particularly soft sleeping experience is important to you. The combed ring yarn feels noticeably more comfortable on the skin – ideal for people with sensitive skin or anyone who wants the best of the best.

Three Typical Situations – and the Right Choice

The sheet is for a children's room or guest bed.
It is washed frequently here, and the price per set counts. Take the biberna Jersey fitted sheet (0077155) from approx. €13.95. The carded cotton withstands frequent 60-degree washes without losing its stretch.

You have sensitive skin or sleep restlessly.
Then the extra cost for the biberna Fine Jersey fitted sheet (0077144) from approx. €20.95 is worth it. Because only long, even fibers are in the yarn, the surface remains smooth – there are no short fiber ends that can scratch the skin.

Your mattress is high or lies under a topper.
With high mattresses, a sheet pops off at the corners if the pocket is too short. Look at the Elastic variants in the Jersey fitted sheet collection, such as the Jersey Elastic fitted sheet (0077866) with an all-around elastic band.

In winter, the sheet feels cool.
Jersey is smooth and quickly dissipates heat when you get into bed. Anyone who finds this uncomfortable switches to a Flannel fitted sheet in the cold season and puts the Jersey sheet back on in spring.

What Is Often Overlooked

The pocket height also matters. Not only the sleeping surface, but also the height of your mattress determines whether the sheet stays on. Measure once before ordering – details on this can be found in the post Choosing the right pocket height & dimensions.

Fabric softener damages both qualities. It forms a film around the fibers and takes away part of the Jersey's elasticity. A full-wash detergent without fabric softener is sufficient.

Fine Jersey ages more slowly. Because no short fibers stick out from the yarn, the surface forms significantly less pilling. After two or three years, you often see the difference between the two qualities more clearly than on the first day.

Both qualities are available at biberna in many colors, from 90x190 cm to 180x200 cm – with matching pillowcases additionally available for Fine Jersey.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Fine Jersey worth the extra cost?
If you are sensitive to textiles or use the sheet daily: yes. For guest and children's beds, which are used less often and washed hot more frequently, Jersey is the more economical choice.

At what temperature can I wash Jersey and Fine Jersey?
Both qualities withstand 60 °C. For normal use, 40 °C is sufficient; 60 °C is particularly useful for house dust allergies.

Do Jersey sheets shrink in the wash?
Cotton swells slightly during the first wash and loses some length. Nevertheless, order in your actual mattress size – the remaining shrinkage is taken into account during manufacturing.

Can the sheets go in the dryer?
Yes, at a low temperature. Take the sheet out slightly damp and pull it up immediately, then you can completely skip ironing.

Why does my old Jersey sheet pill?
Short fibers in the carded yarn work their way to the surface over time and knot there. Read more about this under Fitted sheet pills and becomes rough.

Are both qualities available in all sizes?
The common dimensions are continuously available. You can see the current selection in the Fitted sheet collection.
