Luxury flannel or Nicki: Which warm bedding is right for you?
Teilen
When the nights get cooler, two warm qualities stand side by side at the entry-level price point of our brand Castell: premium flannel and Nicki. Both are priced at around 30 euros, both provide noticeable warmth – and yet they feel completely different in bed. Whether premium flannel or Nicki is the right choice cannot be answered in one size fits all: it depends on which handle you like, which dimensions you need, and what the set is intended for.
What really matters when comparing
Both qualities generate their warmth in the same way: through a soft surface that traps air. Air is the best insulator – that is why a fluffy or velvety surface warms noticeably better than a smoothly woven fabric. How this surface is created, however, is the decisive difference. Four points determine which quality is right for you:
- The surface. Premium flannel is a cotton quality that is brushed: During brushing, fine fiber ends are pulled out of the yarn, they stand up and form a fluffy layer. Nicki, on the other hand, has a short, standing pile – the surface is not brushed, but consists of dense, velvety fibers from the outset.
- The handle. Brushed goods feel warm and dry, Nicki velvety and soft. This is purely a matter of taste – but one that you will notice on the first night.
- Selection and dimensions. Depending on whether you are dressing a standard bed or a larger bed, the selection shrinks very quickly. In practice, this is often the criterion that makes the decision.
- Intended use. The master bedroom, guest room, or children's room have different requirements for design, maintenance, and price.

Which one is right for you?
You are dressing a standard bed and want a design that looks like winter. Then premium flannel is your quality. The Castell Premium Flannel Bedding in Chili (0080447) costs around €29.95 and comes as a ready-made set in 135x200 + 80x80 cm – you order once and you are done. Those who prefer it calmer take Spruce (0080752) or Moss (0080458) instead.
You like a velvety surface and like to sleep "wrapped up". Then you should go for Nicki. The short pile feels warm immediately, even if the bed is still cooled down. An uncomplicated entry is the Castell Nicki Bedding (0380746) from around €27.95.
Your bed needs a larger duvet cover size. Then the decision is obvious: we currently only offer premium flannel in the standard size of 135x200 cm, Nicki on the other hand additionally in a larger size from around €32.95. Check the available sizes directly on the product page, for example with the Castell Nicki Bedding in Dove Blue (0380339).
You are furnishing a children's or youth room. Here Nicki scores with the larger design selection – for example Block Check in Yellow (0380750) or Wide Stripes in Ocean (0380454), both from around €27.95. The velvety surface also usually appeals more to children than a rough handle.
What is often overlooked
The size often decides faster than the handle. Those who are torn between premium flannel and Nicki for a long time should first measure again. A fixed set in 135x200 + 80x80 cm is useless if the duvet measures 155x220 cm. Therefore, always check the dimensions on the product page first and then the design.
Fabric softener is the biggest mistake with both. It forms a film around the fiber and takes away exactly the property for which you bought the bedding from both the fluffy layer and the pile. The care label is always decisive; a short, mild dryer cycle raises the surface again.
The first washes. Brushed qualities release loose excess fibers at the beginning – this is typical for the material and subsides after a few washes. Why this is and when it is no longer normal, you can read in the post Flannel bedding pills and fuzzes.
Durability and price. Both qualities are manufactured according to biberna specifications and tested in Hamminkeln. Because we deliver directly to you and not through the middleman, you pay approximately what is often charged in retail for significantly lighter goods for an original quality. Do not calculate in purchase price, but in winters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does premium flannel or Nicki warm better?
Both keep you reliably warm in winter, the difference lies less in the warming performance than in the feeling. Nicki feels immediately velvety-warm when you get in, premium flannel rather dry-fluffy. If you are looking for significantly more warmth than both offer, Melange Flannel or Fine flannel is the right level.
Which quality is easier to care for?
Both are uncomplicated, as long as you do without fabric softener. The care label of the respective set is decisive – it is on every product and takes precedence over any general recommendation.
Why are there only three premium flannel designs?
Premium flannel is the entry-level quality of our brand Castell and is deliberately offered as a fixed set in a few colors. This concentration keeps the price at around €29.95. As of October 2026, we offer Chili, Spruce, and Moss.
Does Nicki build up static electricity?
Velvety surfaces tend to crackle more in dry heated air than smooth fabrics. What helps against this, we have compiled in the guide Bedding builds up static electricity.
What is the difference between Nicki and Fleece?
Both are soft, warming qualities of our brand Castell, but differ significantly in surface and handle. You can find the direct comparison under Nicki or Fleece: What really warms?
Is the upgrade to Melange Flannel worth it?
If you never really get warm even under warm bedding, yes. Melange Flannel is our further development of the biberna, even fluffier and softer, and was developed exactly for frostbeulen. You can read the classification of all warm qualities under Premium Flannel, Melange Flannel, or Fine flannel.
Conclusion: Premium flannel is the classic, dry-fluffy winter fabric in standard size, Nicki the velvety alternative with the larger selection of designs and dimensions. You can find both in our Winter Bedding – directly from the manufacturer and always free of shipping costs without a minimum order value.
