Premium flannel and Melange flannel are right next to each other in our range: both made of 100% cotton, both brushed, both made for cold nights. However, there is around 20 euros between a set of the former and a set of the latter quality. Anyone who compares premium flannel or Melange flannel is rightly wondering what this surcharge actually stands for. It cannot be answered generally – the difference is spread over several points, and depending on what the bedding is intended for, you are paying for something you really need, or for something that plays no role in your case.
What the price of brushed cotton consists of
Brushed means: Fine fiber ends are pulled out of the finished fabric, which stand up and form a fluffy layer. This layer holds air, and air is the actual heat storage in bed. Both qualities can do this. The price difference arises at four other points:
- The brand and its claim. Premium flannel belongs to Castell, our entry-level brand. Melange flannel is a biberna quality – the premium line of the company that invented Biber bedding (brushed cotton flannel) in 1968.
- Yarn and feel. Melange flannel is our further development of the classic Flannel, internally called "Flannel 2.0": even fluffier and even softer in feel. The mottled look is not created in the print, but already in the yarn, in which differently colored fibers are spun together. This is more complex than a printed fabric – and it is the reason why the color is not on the surface, but in the fiber.
- Selection and sizes. We deliberately keep premium flannel narrow: as of October 2026, three designs, each as a fixed set of 135x200 cm and 80x80 cm. Melange flannel is available in significantly more designs, in further dimensions and with its own children's designs. This range depth costs money in production.
- Exclusivity. We developed Melange flannel ourselves; in this way of making, the quality is almost exclusively available with us worldwide. Premium flannel is a good, classic flannel fabric – but not one that no one else could produce.
What the price does not explain: an intermediary. We weave, finish and make up with high manufacturing depth in-house and deliver directly to you. That is why the premium quality is also at a price for which significantly lighter goods are often quoted in retail.

Which one is right for you?
You want to try out brushed bedding first. Then do not spend 50 euros right away. The Castell Premium Flannel Bedding in Chili (0080447) costs 29.95 € and comes as a complete set in 135x200 + 80x80 cm. If you notice after a winter that brushed cotton is good for you, switch to the finer quality – and then have the premium flannel set as a change set.
You get cold in bed, even under a thick blanket. Then the surcharge is exactly what it is intended for. Melange flannel was developed for people who never get properly warm at night. You are furnishing a guest room. Here it counts that the bed is warm in case of emergency – not that it impresses for 300 nights a year. The Castell Premium Flannel Bedding in Spruce (0080752) for 29.95 € is the economically sensible choice for this, and the standard size fits almost every guest bed.
You are dressing a child's bed. Then the feel decides. Children lie directly on the fabric, kick themselves free and cool down faster than adults. The biberna Melange Flannel Children's Bedding Zoo Animals (0840520) is available from around 34.95 €, further motifs are in the Children's Bedding.
You need a different size than 135x200 cm. Then availability decides, not the price: We only offer premium flannel as a set in the German standard size. For oversized and comfort sizes, the path leads to Melange Flannel or to the Winter Bedding.
What is often overlooked
The price per winter instead of per set. A set for 29.95 €, which gets thin after three years, is more expensive than one for 49.95 €, which lasts ten winters. Long, well-twisted cotton yarns are the reason why the fluffy layer in the finer quality remains stable after the shrinkage phase, instead of letting up.
The care is identical for both. Both qualities are pure cotton, usually washable at 60 °C and suitable for the dryer – the care label remains decisive. And both tolerate no fabric softener: It forms a film around the fiber and takes away exactly the fluffiness that you bought it for. A short, mild dryer run, on the other hand, fluff it up again.
The first washes fuzz – for both. Loose fiber excess from the brushing process comes loose in the first three to five washes. This is not a quality defect and no argument for or against one of the two qualities. What helps is explained in the post Flannel Bedding Fuzzes and Pills.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Melange flannel warm more than premium flannel?
The feel is noticeably warmer: Melange flannel is fluffier and softer, and a denser fluffy layer holds more air and thus more body heat. The difference is real, but no jump between "cold" and "warm" – both qualities are winter bedding.
Is premium flannel worse quality?
No, it is a different positioning. Premium flannel is brushed, pure cotton from our entry-level brand Castell – solidly made, just equipped more simply and concentrated on a few designs and one set size. Exactly this concentration keeps the price at 29.95 €.
Why is premium flannel only available in one size?
Because a fixed set in the most common German size is the cheapest to manufacture. As of October 2026, we offer three colors – Chili, Spruce and Kitt – each as a set of 135x200 cm and 80x80 cm. Anyone who needs other dimensions will find them in Melange flannel.
Are the 20 euros surcharge worth it?
For the main bed usually yes, because you lie there every night of the winter and the feel and durability pay off daily. For a guest bed, which is used ten nights a year, the surcharge is hard to justify on the other hand.
Can I combine both qualities?
Yes, and for couples with different heat needs, this is even a good solution: two covers in different qualities on the same bed. Both are cotton, wash the same and look harmonious next to each other, as long as the color palette matches.
