Biber flannel or Renforcé – which bedding do you really need?
Teilen
At the latest when the first evenings turn chilly, the question arises: Flannel or Renforcé? It cannot be answered in one go – because the right choice depends less on the fabric than on your bedroom, your perception of warmth, and whether you want to change twice a year or would prefer a quality for all seasons. This guide shows you which decision is right for which situation.
What really matters when deciding
Before you decide on a quality, it is worth looking at four things that make the difference:
- Your bedroom temperature. Below 17 °C, Flannel plays to its strengths. From about 19 °C and above, it quickly becomes too warm for many people, and Renforcé is the more pleasant choice.
- Your perception of warmth. Those who go to bed with cold feet and take a long time to warm up benefit from the brushed surface. Those who tend to sweat at night find the same surface too dense.
- Your seasonal rhythm. Flannel is a seasonal quality: you put it on in October and take it off in March. Renforcé stays out all year. This is less a question of material than of household management.
- The feel you like. Flannel is matte, soft, and slightly "clingy" – it feels warm to the touch before it warms you. Renforcé is smooth, cool at first, and does not pile on.
Technically, the main differences between the two qualities are the surface and the fabric weight. Renforcé is a smooth cotton fabric in a plain weave – the easy-care everyday classic. Flannel is a cotton fabric brushed: The fine, raised fiber ends form air pockets, and it is precisely this air that warms. biberna-Biber weighs 160 g/m² and consists of pure cotton. We invented Biber bedding (brushed cotton flannel) in 1968 and still manufacture it today according to the original recipe.
Flannel or Renforcé in direct comparison
| Quality | Surface & feel | Warming properties | Ideal for | Price range (direct price) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| biberna Flannel / Fine Flannel (160 g/m², 100% cotton) | Brushed, matte, fluffy | Retains body heat in air pockets, warms immediately | October to March, cool bedrooms, people who get cold easily | approx. €49.95–59.95 |
| Castell Fine Flannel (entry-level price) | Brushed, slightly lighter feel | Noticeably warming, less heavy | Second set, guest room, children's room | approx. €25.95–34.95 |
| Castell Renforcé (plain weave, cotton) | Smooth, matte, light | Temperature neutral, does not trap heat | All-year bed, heated bedrooms, everyday use | approx. €25.95–32.95 |
| Daniel Hechter Renforcé | Smooth with design | Temperature neutral like any Renforcé | For those looking for Renforcé with a stylish design | approx. €49.99–59.99 |
| biberna Melange Flannel ("Flannel 2.0") | Even softer and fluffier than Flannel | Warmest quality in the range | For those who are still cold even under Flannel | approx. €49.00–79.95 |
The table shows it clearly: There is no "better", only what is better for you. Therefore, the next step – four situations in which the answer is clear.
Which one is right for you?
1. Your bedroom is between 16 and 18 °C and you only warm up in the evening.
Then Flannel is the clear recommendation. The brushed surface absorbs body heat immediately, instead of letting it escape into the fabric. Our recommendation: biberna Fine Flannel Stripes in Storm Grey & Sage, Item No. 0007253, from €49.95 – a subtle striped design that doesn't look like a winter bed even in winter.
2. You heat normally, tend to sleep warm, and want a quality for the whole year.
Then you can skip the seasonal change and stick with Renforcé. Our recommendation: Castell Renforcé in Storm Grey, Item No. 0040568, from €25.95. Solid color, easy-care, and affordable enough to take two sets for changing.
3. You want both – but don't want to pay twice.
The most economical solution is two Renforcé sets as a base plus one Flannel set for the cold months. As a winter addition, the entry-level quality is perfectly sufficient: Castell Fine Flannel in Blackberry, Item No. 0301129, from €25.95.
4. You are still cold even under Flannel.
Then Renforcé is not the alternative, but the next step up. Our recommendation: biberna Melange Flannel, Item No. 0840500, from €49.95 – our further development of Flannel made from 100% cotton, even fluffier to the touch and made entirely in Germany.

What is often overlooked when choosing
The care is hardly different – the result is. Both qualities are pure cotton and can withstand the usual wash cycle. The difference lies in the dryer: Flannel comes out fluffier than it went in, because the brushed fibers stand up again in the drum. Renforcé benefits more from being taken out slightly damp and smoothed out. Find out more in our post Drying Bedding: Dryer or Clothesline?.
New Flannel bedding sheds at first, Renforcé does not. Roughening creates loose fiber ends that come loose in the first few washes. This is not a quality defect and subsides after a few cycles – during this time, it is worth cleaning the lint filter more frequently.
Renforcé wrinkles more visibly. The smooth surface shows every fold, while the brushed Flannel structure conceals them. If you do not want to iron, Flannel is more relaxed in winter.
Pay attention to the fabric weight, not the name. "Flannel" is not a protected designation. What matters is how much cotton is actually in the square meter – with our Flannel, it is 160 g/m². Lighter goods from the trade feel similar in the store, but lose their fluffiness much faster. How the difference between Flannel and Fine Flannel is created, we explain in Fine Flannel vs. Flannel.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Flannel bedding too warm in summer?
For most people, yes. Flannel specifically retains body heat – which is pleasant in winter, but quickly leads to night sweats at a room temperature of 22 °C. For summer, it is better to opt for Renforcé or a designated summer quality.
Can I also use Renforcé in winter?
Yes, without restriction. Renforcé is temperature neutral: It does not actively warm, but it also does not retain heat. In a heated bedroom with a suitable duvet, this is completely sufficient for many people all year round.
Which quality is easier to care for?
Renforcé is simpler in everyday use because it does not shed and dries faster. Flannel, on the other hand, is practically wrinkle-free – its structure does not let folds show at all. So it depends on which task you prefer to avoid.
Does Flannel scratch more than Renforcé?
No, on the contrary. High-quality Flannel feels softer from the start than smooth cotton. A slightly firmer feel in brand-new goods comes from the sizing and disappears after the first wash.
How many sets do I need of each quality?
As a rule of thumb: two sets of the all-year quality for changing and one to two Flannel sets for the cold season. If you are furnishing a guest room, add another set per bed.
Can I combine a Flannel duvet cover and a Renforcé sheet?
Yes, and many people deliberately do so. The fitted sheet lies directly on the mattress and mainly influences how warm the first moment in bed feels – the duvet cover decides the climate under the blanket. A smooth sheet with a warm duvet cover is a common combination.
