Giving a throw as a gift: What size, what material – and for whom?

Giving a throw as a gift is a good idea – and yet difficult to get right. You probably know the recipient's taste well, but do you also know whether they get cold quickly, whether they like the fluffy feel of fleece, or prefer the feel of pure cotton on their skin? These are exactly the questions that determine whether the throw will be on the sofa every evening or disappear into the closet after two weeks. There is therefore no one-size-fits-all recommendation – but there is a clear decision-making logic.

What really matters when choosing a throw as a gift

Four dimensions determine whether the gift is right. Everything else – color, design, brand – is a matter of taste and is easier to estimate.

  • Warmth requirements. Anyone who quickly gets cold feet in the evening needs pile: Sherpa or teddy fleece retains body heat noticeably faster than a smooth cotton fabric. On the other hand, someone who quickly gets too warm will put a fleece throw aside after ten minutes.
  • Material and feel. Polyester fleece qualities are lightweight, very fluffy, and dry quickly. Cotton is heavier, more breathable, and feels cooler – it works all year round, but does not warm as quickly.
  • Usage. Pure cozy throw, bedspread over the bed, or decorative element on the sofa? Reversible throws with two different sides have the advantage here, because they adapt to the room.
  • Care. A throw that lives on the sofa will be washed. Most qualities can withstand 60 °C, while lightweight summer throws can only handle 40 °C. Anyone who has pets or small children in the household should opt for the 60 °C qualities.

Giving a throw: Which one is right for whom?

Four typical situations – and exactly one recommendation for each.

The recipient gets cold all the time. Here, only how quickly the throw warms matters. Choose the biberna Sherpa throw (Art. 0229209): The Sherpa fleece retains body heat immediately, the throw is double-sided, and with ten color shades, it is the most flexible choice in the range – at the lowest price.

It should clearly look like a gift. Then the first touch decides. The Hechter Paris Teddyfleece throw (Art. 0238002) combines an exceptionally soft teddy fleece side with a smooth Sherpa side and comes in exclusive color combinations – two feelings of well-being in one throw.

The recipient exclusively likes natural fibers. Then fleece is out. The biberna Melange throw (Art. 0837476) consists of 100% cotton, is designed differently on both sides as a reversible throw, and is light enough on the balcony in summer and dense enough over the legs in winter.

The gift is intended for summer. A fleece throw would be a wrong purchase here. The biberna Muslin summer throw (Art. 0480100) made of multi-layered woven muslin warms gently without getting sweaty underneath – and gets softer with every wash.

What is often overlooked when giving a gift

Size is not a risk. Unlike with bedding, you don't need to measure anything here: All throws in the biberna range have the dimensions 150 × 200 cm. That is enough to wrap yourself up completely as an adult – from the shoulders down to the feet. If two people regularly sit on the sofa, two throws are a better solution than one larger one; a throw is rarely divided voluntarily.

The washing temperature reveals everyday suitability. The 60 °C qualities – Sherpa, Doubleface, Teddyfleece, Melange cotton, and the brushed cotton throws – are the right choice if a dog, cat, or children are also lying on the sofa. The Muslin summer throw is washed at 40 °C and not ironed.

Durability is determined by the piping. The hem is the place where a throw gives out first. Fully piped edges and crocheted seams last significantly longer than simply folded edges – a detail that can be seen on the finished gift and can be mentioned when giving it.

Color beats brand. A throw sits visibly in the living room. Muted tones like Storm Gray, Taupe, Cream, or Navy fit into almost any interior; a bold Burgundy or Jade only works if you really know the interior style.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is a throw?
Our throws are uniformly 150 × 200 cm. This size completely covers an adult lying down and also serves as a bedspread over the bed. So you don't have to make a size decision when giving it as a gift.

Cotton or fleece – which is the better gift?
That depends on the warmth requirements. Polyester fleece qualities warm faster, are lighter, and dry quickly. Cotton is more breathable, feels cooler, and works all year round. For those who get cold a lot, choose fleece; for those who prefer natural fibers or want to use the throw in summer too, choose cotton.

At what temperature do you wash a throw?
The Sherpa, Teddyfleece, Doubleface, and cotton throws can withstand 60 °C. The Muslin summer throw is washed at 40 °C and not ironed. For fleece, make sure to use a detergent without fabric softener – it coats the pile and takes away its fluffiness.

How much does a good throw cost?
Our range goes from €29.95 for the Muslin summer throw to €89.99 for the Hechter Paris Sherpa throw. In our experience, the range between €40 and €70 is usually the most appropriate as a gift: high-quality enough without embarrassing the recipient.

Are there shipping costs?
No. We deliver all products within Germany free of charge and without a minimum order value – even a single throw. As a manufacturer with direct sales, we pass on the original quality without any middleman.

Give a throw or rather bedding?
The throw is the lower-risk gift: It is uniformly 150 × 200 cm, so it always fits, and it is used in the living room instead of being stored in the bedroom. Bedding, on the other hand, requires you to know the bed size and pillow dimensions. You can find a selection under Throws.
