Sweating through the night: Which fitted sheet can handle the moisture?
Teilen
When you reach for a damp sheet in the morning, you usually look for the cause in the duvet. But the layer directly under the body determines how dry a night will be. Whether a fitted sheet for night sweats wicks away moisture or traps it depends on the fiber, structure, and the layer underneath – and that is exactly why there is no one-size-fits-all answer.
What really matters for night sweats
A fitted sheet is the only textile layer directly between the skin and the mattress. Four properties determine how it performs on a sweaty night:
- Absorbency: How much moisture does the fabric absorb before it feels damp? Loop and terry structures absorb significantly more than smooth fabrics.
- Drying speed: It is not just about absorption, but also release. A fabric that holds onto moisture until morning will feel damp.
- Fiber: Cotton absorbs moisture into the fiber, making it feel dry. Synthetic fibers wick it away but store almost none – this can make the skin feel damp more quickly.
- Heat retention: Brushed qualities like flannel retain body heat. This is desirable in winter, but counterproductive for night sweats.
There is also one point that is rarely considered: what lies under the sheet helps determine whether the moisture can be drawn away at all.

Which fitted sheet is right for you?
You wake up several times a week with a damp sheet
Here, pure absorption capacity counts. The Terry Stretch Fitted Sheet (0012344) absorbs the largest amount of moisture thanks to its loop structure and releases it during the day. With a 35 cm pocket depth, it fits mattresses up to 27 cm. You can find all variants under Terry Fitted Sheets.
You only sweat on warm nights
If the problem is seasonal, terry would be too much fabric on the mattress all year round. The Fine Jersey Fitted Sheet (0077144) is smooth, breathable, and comfortable year-round – the balanced choice for changeable nights. More knit sheets: Jersey Fitted Sheets.
You change the sheet frequently – sometimes in the middle of the night
If you change the sheets two or three times a week, you mainly need a supply in the closet. The Jersey Fitted Sheet (0077155) from €13.95 makes exactly that affordable: two or three to rotate, all washable at 60 °C and dryer-safe.
You sleep in a box spring bed
On high mattresses, standard sheets ride up at the corners, and a sheet that does not fit properly creates folds where moisture can collect. The Jersey-Elastic-Boxspring Fitted Sheet (0077640) has a 35–50 cm pocket depth and stays taut even on mattresses 25 to 40 cm high.
What is often overlooked
The layer under the sheet. Moisture that passes through the sheet ends up in the mattress – where it dries very slowly. A Molton Mattress Pad made of pure cotton, such as the Sleep & Protect Molton Mattress Pad (0808301), absorbs this part and can be washed with the sheet. Important: A waterproof pad like variant 0809720 reliably keeps liquids out, but slows down the transfer of moisture downwards. If you sweat but do not need to keep liquids out, pure molton is the better choice.
The pocket depth. A sheet that is too short will be permanently stretched at the corners and pop off at night. Measure the mattress height before ordering – standard models fit up to 25 cm, above that, box spring or topper qualities belong in bed.
The washing cycle. For night sweats, a shorter cycle than the usual two weeks is worth it. Two sheets to rotate make this practical without leaving the bed without a sheet.
The origin. Our flannel fitted sheets and molton pads are made in full-stage production in Germany – from the yarn to the finished sheet. This is evident in their shape retention after many washes, and that is exactly the deciding point for frequent washing. Shipping is always free with no minimum order value.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which fitted sheet is best for heavy sweating?
Terry Stretch made of cotton. The loop structure absorbs the most moisture and dries quickly again. For only occasional sweating, smooth fine jersey is sufficient and feels more comfortable year-round.
Do you sweat more under flannel fitted sheets?
Flannel is brushed and retains body heat at the sheet. This is desirable in winter, but exacerbates the problem with night sweats. If you are cold in winter but still sweat, it is better to combine a smooth sheet with a warmer blanket.
Does a mattress protector help against damp mattresses?
Yes, as a buffer. A molton pad absorbs the moisture before it reaches the mattress, and then transfers it to the laundry. The mattress itself cannot be washed – the pad can.
Is microfiber suitable for night sweats?
Only to a limited extent. Microfiber wicks moisture away, but stores almost none in the fiber, so the surface feels damp more quickly. Cotton qualities like terry or fine jersey have the advantage here.
How often should I change the fitted sheet for night sweats?
Once or twice a week is a realistic cycle. Our fitted sheets are washable at 60 °C and dryer-safe; the sewn-in care label remains the deciding factor.
Does a normal fitted sheet fit on a high mattress?
Yes, up to about 25 cm mattress height. Above that, you need a model with a larger pocket depth, such as the Jersey-Elastic-Boxspring Fitted Sheet (0077640) with 35–50 cm.
