Two mattresses in a double bed: one fitted sheet or two?
Teilen
Two mattresses side by side, with a gap between them that becomes noticeable at night: When choosing a fitted sheet for a double bed, you have to decide between a single sheet covering both mattresses and two individual sheets. There is no one-size-fits-all answer, as the right solution depends on whether your mattresses are the same height, whether the bed base is adjustable, and who changes the bedding. We go through the four key factors that really make the difference.
Fitted sheets for double beds: the four key factors
1. The gap between the mattresses. Two separate sheets accentuate the gap because each one is pulled down at the inner edge – this doesn't make the gap wider, but it does make it much more noticeable. A single sheet covers the gap smoothly. However, only as long as it stays taut: as soon as it gives way, the fabric slips into the gap and forms a ridge down the middle in the morning.
2. The bed base. If you have two separate frames, possibly with adjustable head or foot sections, a single sheet is practically ruled out: it pulls on the other side when raised and prevents adjustment. In this case, two individual sheets are not the second-best option, but the only sensible solution.
3. Mattresses of equal or different heights. If you sleep on two different firmness levels or heights – for example, because one partner has a newer mattress –, a single sheet will inevitably sit crooked. It will be too loose on the lower side and too tight on the higher side. If there is a height difference of more than two or three centimetres, two sheets are the more comfortable solution.
4. Handling and washing. A sheet in double-bed width is heavy, takes up the entire drum, and must be pulled over both mattresses when changed – a difficult task for one person. You can change two narrow sheets individually, wash them with the rest of the bedding, and replace only one side if needed. If you change the sheets more often at night, you will notice the difference every week.

Which solution is right for you?
Two mattresses of equal height on a single frame, and the gap bothers you. Then choose a single sheet wide enough to cover both mattresses. The biberna fine jersey fitted sheet (item number 0077144) from €20.95 is highly recommended: finely knitted, smooth, and with enough stretch to stay taut over the gap. You can see the available widths at Fitted Sheets 180 x 200 to 200 x 200 cm.
You have separate frames or an adjustable bed base. In this case, each mattress needs its own sheet. The biberna jersey fitted sheet (item number 0077155) from €13.95 is the reliable standard – buying two is still cheaper than one large sheet. If you want to save money on a second bed or in a guest room, choose the Castell jersey-stretch fitted sheet (item number 0077113) from €10.95.
You sleep on a box spring bed with two high mattresses. Standard sheets will come loose at the corners as soon as the mattress is more than 25 cm high. For each side, choose the biberna jersey-elastic box spring fitted sheet (item number 0077640) from €39.95, with a skirt height of 35–50 cm. If a single topper lies over both mattresses, cover the topper instead – with the jersey-elastic topper fitted sheet (0077641) from €28.95 for toppers 7 to 12 cm high.
The gap is still noticeable, even though the sheet fits. Then you need an intermediate layer. A single Sleep & Protect molton mattress pad (item number 0808422) from €18.95 lies over both mattresses, fills the gap, and protects both mattresses at the same time. You can then use either two individual sheets or one sheet over both. Other versions – including waterproof ones such as the pad 0808315 from €15.95 – can be found at Molton Mattress Protectors & Mattress Pads.
What is often overlooked
Measure each mattress individually. With two mattresses, it is easy to measure once and double the dimensions. Check the width, length, and especially the height of both mattresses separately – especially if one is newer. The height determines the skirt height and is the most frequently forgotten measurement.
A topper changes everything. If a single topper lies over both mattresses, the decision has already been made: cover only the topper, using a flat-cut model. The mattresses underneath should be fitted with mattress protectors instead of sheet covers.
Rotating the sheets extends their lifespan. Two sets used alternately will last longer together than one set that goes into the washing machine every week. This is especially true for a single sheet, which must withstand the movements of two people.
You will notice where the sheet comes from after the twentieth wash. Frequently Asked Questions
Is a single fitted sheet better than two individual sheets?
Only if both mattresses are the same height and lie on a single frame. Then the gap disappears visually and when you lie down. With separate frames, adjustable bed bases, or mattresses of different heights, two individual sheets fit significantly better.
What really helps against the gap between the mattresses?
A single intermediate layer. A molton mattress pad over both mattresses fills the gap and creates friction, so the mattresses are less likely to move apart. The sheet over it will then stay smooth, whether you use one or two.
Can I use two sheets and still have a single mattress pad?
Yes, this is actually the most flexible combination: the pad stays in place while you only change the sheet on the affected side. This saves you the large sheet while still giving you a smooth surface down the middle.
Which material slips the least down the middle?
Qualities with an elastane content such as jersey-elastic (0077866), because they stay taut and do not give way into the gap. Woven fabrics such as Flannel give way less, but are therefore less stretchy – yet they are still the warmer choice in winter.
What should I do if one mattress is higher than the other?
Use two individual sheets and choose each one to suit the height of the mattress. A single sheet will not compensate for the difference; instead, it will be tight on the higher side and wrinkle on the lower side.
Is a second sheet worth it for the guest bed?
Yes. Guest beds often consist of two single mattresses pushed together, and two narrow sheets are more flexible to use – either separately or side by side.
