Mattress protector or dimpled pad – what goes under the mattress?
Teilen
Anyone who is setting up their bed again or has bought a fresh mattress will quickly find themselves asking: Molton or non-slip matting – and what actually goes under the mattress? The two products are often offered side by side in stores, as if they were alternatives. They are not: they are located in different places in the bed and solve different problems. Which one you need – or whether you need both – depends on what you want to protect.
The short answer – and why it must be differentiated
A molton pad lies on the mattress, under the fitted sheet. A non-slip matting lies under the mattress, between the slatted base and the underside of the mattress. This also makes it clear what each one does: molton catches everything that comes from above – moisture, body sweat, skin flakes. The non-slip matting works downwards: it keeps the mattress in place and protects it from the pressure points of the slatted base slats.
Therefore, the two do not exclude each other. In many beds, it makes sense to have both. If the budget only allows for one, the problem you actually have will decide.
The decision dimensions: what really matters
1. What do you want to catch? Moisture and hygiene speak for molton. Slipping, wandering of the mattress, and imprints from the slatted base speak for the non-slip matting.
2. How often do you want to wash? Molton is a washable product – it goes into the machine regularly, ideally in the rhythm of changing the bedding or slightly less often. A non-slip matting lies at the bottom and is touched much less often.
3. How is your bed built? A classic slatted base with individual spring wood slats is the typical case for non-slip matting. A box spring bed or a continuous base usually needs nothing there – but probably a pad on top.
4. Who lies in bed? For children, for seniors, and in home care, the absorbent layer on top is almost always the more important decision.
Molton and non-slip matting compared
| Product | Property | Ideal for | Price range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Molton mattress pad | Absorbent cotton pad on the mattress, under the sheet; washable | Moisture, hygiene, preservation of mattress value | from approx. €19 |
| Waterproof molton | Molton top with a barrier layer – moisture does not pass through | Children's bed, care, pets in bed | from approx. €23 |
| Non-slip mattress protector | Non-slip matting between slatted base and mattress | Wandering mattress, visible slat imprints | from approx. €24 |
| Smooth mattress matting | Simple separation layer downwards, low profile | Slim beds, second bed, guest room | from approx. €17 |
| Molton + non-slip combined | Protection upwards and downwards | New, high-quality mattress that is intended to last a long time | from approx. €38 |
Which one is right for you?
You have just bought a new mattress and want to protect it. Then the absorbent layer on top belongs. The Sleep & Protect Molton Mattress Pad in Natural (Item No. 0808301, from €20.95) is the classic for this – it absorbs nighttime moisture before it reaches the mattress, and then simply goes into the machine. In white, there is the same quality as Item 0808302 (from €21.95).
Your mattress wanders overnight or you see slat imprints on the underside. This is the case for the layer downwards: The Sleep & Protect Non-Slip Mattress Protector (Item No. 0809504, from €24.95) keeps the mattress on the slatted base and distributes the pressure of the individual slats. If the setup should remain as flat as possible, the smooth Sleep & Protect Mattress Matting (Item No. 0809508, from €16.95) is the slimmer solution.
A child, a person in need of care, or a dog lies in bed. Then absorbency alone is not enough – it must be waterproof. The waterproof molton mattress pad (Item No. 0809720, from €29.95) combines the soft molton surface with a barrier layer. For small mattresses, you can find the right dimensions in the Mattress protector for children's beds.
You sleep on a box spring bed with a topper. Under the mattress, there is nothing to protect there – the base is closed. The protection belongs on the topper, and flat enough so that it does not change the lying comfort: for this, there is the Molton mattress pad for toppers (Item No. 0808316, from €19.95).
What is often overlooked
The order in the bed. From bottom to top: slatted base, non-slip matting, mattress, molton pad, fitted sheet. If you accidentally put the molton under the mattress, you have deprived both products of their effect. Which fitted sheet belongs on top is explained in our guide Fitted sheet or molton pad on the mattress.
The size is the mattress, not the bed. A pad that is too short at the corners will slip together in the first week. Measure the lying surface, not the frame.
Durability is decided during washing. Molton is pure cotton and can be washed hot – that is exactly what makes it so useful in allergy households. Our molton qualities are produced in full-stage production in Germany, in our own weaving mill in Hamminkeln. That we have also been producing stage molton for decades is no coincidence: the fiber and finishing expertise behind it is the same – only here it benefits a mattress instead of a theater curtain.
Both together is rarely a waste. Calculate the protection against the mattress price: A good mattress should last eight to ten years. The combination of pad and matting costs a fraction of that.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I really need both?
No. If your bed has a closed base or the mattress lies stably, the molton pad on top is enough. The non-slip matting solves a concrete problem – slipping and slat imprints – and is only necessary if you have this problem.
Does the molton replace the fitted sheet?
No. The molton lies underneath and remains invisible. The fitted sheet goes over it and is the layer you feel. Both are washed, the molton only less often.
How often does the molton pad need to go into the wash?
As a rule of thumb: every second to third change of bedding. With heavy sweating, in care, or in the children's bed accordingly more often. It makes sense to have a second molton on hand, so that the bed can be made again immediately while the first one is being washed.
Does the non-slip matting make the mattress harder?
It lies under the mattress and practically does not change the lying feeling. What it changes is the pressure distribution from below: instead of individual slats, a continuous surface presses – this prevents the typical imprints on the underside of the mattress.
What is suitable for an allergy?
The absorbent layer on top is the more important one here. Molton made of pure cotton can be washed hot and removes the moisture that dust mites live on. More about this in our guide Mattress protection for house dust allergies.
