You can feel the mattress protector through the sheet: What causes this – and which protectors stay soft
Teilen
The mattress is protected, the sheet is on – and yet there is something between you and the mattress that feels smooth, firm, or slightly rippled. A noticeable mattress protector is not a matter of imagination: depending on its construction, a mattress pad may or may not be noticeable, and some materials simply do not give. There is no blanket answer to the question, because whether you notice the protection depends on four things – the material, the fastening, the sheet over it, and your mattress.
Why a mattress protector becomes noticeable
The coating. Waterproof pads need a sealed layer. If this layer is right on the surface, you are lying on plastic instead of fabric: it hardly gives when you press down, feels smooth, and traps heat. This is exactly what most people describe when they say they can feel the mattress protector.
The fabric over it. Ticking is a tightly woven cotton fabric with a brushed finish on both sides. It is soft, absorbs moisture, and behaves like fabric – it springs back when you lie on it. In waterproof molton pads, the cotton surface is on top, with the waterproof layer underneath. So you are lying on cotton, not on the barrier layer.
The fastening. A pad with four elastic corners may move with you when you turn over. If it shifts, creases form – and a crease under the sheet feels like a ridge. Mattress pads in the form of a fitted sheet with an all-around elastic band remain flat and taut, and are less likely to form these ridges.
The sheet and the mattress. A thin, smooth jersey sheet transmits every texture to the surface; a denser fine bib or terry sheet absorbs them. And on a firm mattress, every additional layer is more noticeable than on a soft one that already gives.

Which protection is right for you?
You feel a smooth, firm layer and it gets warm at night. Then a coated surface is probably right under the sheet. Switch to an uncoated molton pad: the Sleep & Protect Molton Mattress Pad in Natural (0808301) is pure cotton, absorbs moisture, and releases it. In white, the same quality is available as 0808302.
You need waterproof protection, but don't want to lie on plastic. That is not a contradiction. The waterproof molton mattress pad (0809720) has the cotton surface on top and the barrier layer underneath. If you prefer it thinner, choose the 0808315 from the same range.
The pad shifts and you feel creases. A softer material won't help here, but a different shape will. The waterproof ticking fitted sheet (0802760) is pulled over the mattress like a sheet and remains taut all around. The stretch ticking fitted sheet 0808421 does the same without waterproof protection.
You are protecting a topper. Toppers are thin, and a standard pad sits too loosely on them. The molton mattress pad for toppers (0808316) is designed for this low height and therefore adds very little thickness.
What is often overlooked
The sheet plays a role too. If a very thin fitted sheet lies over the protector, every texture is transmitted to the surface. A denser sheet from the Fitted Sheets & Mattress Sheets collection – such as fine bib or stretch terry – compensates for texture much better than a thin jersey.
The fit. A pad that is too large will crease, while one that is too small will pull away from the corners and roll up at the edges. Measure the height of your mattress before ordering – this point is regularly underestimated with box spring beds and mattresses with toppers. Read more about this in our article The mattress pad creases or slips.
Care. Ticking gets softer with every wash, not harder. Coated pads are less resilient – follow the care label, especially when tumble drying. How long the protection lasts depends less on its age than on whether the coating is still intact.
Origin. Our ticking products are made in our own factory in Hamminkeln – Made in Germany, with the manufacturing depth we have built up since 1932. Delivery is always free of charge, with no minimum order value.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can I feel the mattress protector, but my partner can't?
This is usually due to body weight and sleeping position. Someone who sleeps on their side and puts more pressure on their shoulder and hip presses harder into the mattress – and is more likely to notice a layer that gives very little than someone who sleeps on their back.
Is a waterproof protector always noticeable?
No. What matters is where the barrier layer is located. If it is under a ticking surface, you are lying on cotton. You only feel it directly if the coating forms the top layer.
Does it help to simply pull a thicker sheet over it?
To some extent. A denser sheet compensates for texture, but not for creases or heat buildup. If the problem lies with the pad itself, a thicker sheet will only shift it.
Does the nobbly mattress protector go over or under the mattress?
Under the mattress, on the slatted bed frame. If placed on top, you would actually feel the nubs – that is where a molton pad belongs.
Do I also need a fitted sheet?
Yes. The mattress protector protects the mattress, while the sheet is the surface you lie on and that you wash regularly. An exception is ticking fitted sheets, which do both in one step – but they are still frequently washed.
How do I find out which variant I have at home?
Run your hand over the top: If it feels slightly brushed and fabric-like, it is ticking. If it feels smooth and cool and rustles when you press down, the coating is on top. You can find an overview of all variants under Mattress Protectors & Mattress Covers and waterproof protection specifically under Waterproof Mattress Protectors.
