The mattress smells musty: Where the odor comes from – and what really helps

You pull off the fitted sheet – and a musty, slightly damp basement-like smell rises from the mattress. This is rarely a question of poor hygiene: If the mattress smells musty, it is almost always due to residual moisture that is not drying out quickly enough. However, the reason it is staying in your bed cannot be answered with a one-size-fits-all explanation. Someone who sweats heavily at night needs a different solution than someone whose bed stands on a closed-off bed base – and someone who uses an airtight protector has actually built the smell in themselves.

Why the mattress smells musty: the four causes

1. Nighttime moisture that cannot escape. The body releases moisture every night. Part of it evaporates through the duvet, the rest migrates down into the sheets and mattress core. During the day, this moisture must escape again – if it cannot, it remains in the foam or springs and eventually begins to smell.

2. Too little air under the mattress. A closed-off bed base, a continuous baseboard, or a mattress directly on the floor prevents air from flowing in from below. The underside then remains permanently damp – this is the most common cause when the smell comes from below and dark stains even appear on the underside of the mattress.

3. A protector that does not breathe. Many inexpensive mattress protectors consist of a polyester layer with a continuous film coating. While they keep liquids out, they simultaneously trap moisture exactly where it does not belong. Anyone who suddenly notices a musty smell after purchasing such a protector usually has the cause right under the sheet.

4. The mattress itself cannot be washed. Sheets and bedding regularly go into the machine, the mattress core never. Everything that passes through the sheet therefore accumulates over the years. This is exactly the gap that a washable mattress protector closes: It catches what would otherwise remain in the core.

By the way, discoloration and smell have the same root – read more about this in The mattress is discoloring.

Comparison of the types of protection

Which protector prevents the smell depends on whether you need to catch moisture from above or create air from below. This overview shows the differences:

Option Feature Ideal for Price range
Natural Molton Mattress Topper (0808301) pure, brushed cotton, absorbs moisture and releases it again; boil-proof up to 95 °C the normal case: catching moisture from above without trapping the bed climate €20.95–29.95
White Molton Mattress Topper (0808302) same molton quality in white, visually neutral under light sheets light beds, guest rooms €21.95–34.95
Waterproof Molton Topper (0809720) cotton molton as a sleeping surface, with a thin breathable membrane underneath children, pets, care situations – where liquids really occur €29.95–40.95
Nobby Mattress Protector (0809504) nobby structure that lifts the mattress from the slatted frame and allows air to circulate smell coming from below: bed base, baseboard, cold exterior wall €24.95–34.95
Waterproof Terry Mattress Cover (0809960) encloses the mattress on all sides instead of just the sleeping surface mattresses that have already acquired a smell and rental properties €59.95–69.95

The decisive difference lies in the material: Molton is brushed cotton. It absorbs moisture, distributes it over the surface, and releases it again during the day – instead of trapping it. biberna produces molton in full-stage production in Germany; the same expertise is behind our stage molton for theaters. This is a real Made-in-Germany argument for molton products, not just a label.

Which protector is right for you?

You sweat at night and the sheet feels damp in the morning. Then you do not need a barrier, but a buffer that absorbs moisture and releases it again. Take the Sleep & Protect Natural Molton Mattress Topper (Art. 0808301) from €20.95 made of pure cotton. A waterproof protector would be exactly the wrong choice here. How moisture and the sleep climate are connected, we explore in Nighttime sweating: Which mattress protector keeps the mattress dry?

The smell comes from below, the bed stands on a bed base or on the floor. No protector on the sleeping surface helps here – there is simply a lack of air. The Sleep & Protect Nobby Mattress Protector (Art. 0809504) from €24.95 keeps the mattress at a distance, so the underside can dry out. Why this is particularly important for new mattresses, read in Mattress Nobby Underlay.

Children or pets sleep in the bed, or liquids actually occur. Then you need both: a tight layer and a breathable sleeping surface. The Sleep & Protect Waterproof Molton Mattress Topper (Art. 0809720) from €29.95 combines exactly that – cotton molton on top, the breathable membrane underneath.

The mattress already smells and you do not want to throw it away. Thoroughly ventilate the core for several days and then enclose it all around: The Sleep & Protect Waterproof Terry Mattress Cover (Art. 0809960) from €59.95 encloses the entire mattress and can be washed, unlike the core. You will find all construction types in our mattress protector range and especially in the Molton Collection.

What is often overlooked

Care: A mattress protector only works as long as it is clean itself. Uncoated molton is boil-proof up to 95 °C, the waterproof variants are washed at 60 °C so that the membrane remains tight. Fabric softener should never be used – it reduces the absorbency. The details are in Washing and caring for mattress protectors.

Fit: In addition to length and width, pay attention to the height of your mattress. A topper with too tight elastic bands will slip, wrinkle, and not stay exactly where most of the moisture occurs. For toppers up to 12 cm, there are separate, flatter variants – such as the waterproof molton topper (Art. 0808316) from €19.95.

Ventilate instead of covering: Turn back the duvet in the morning instead of immediately smoothing the bed. Twenty minutes of an open bed with a tilted window bring more than any fragrance spray. What air humidity in the bedroom is sensible, we explain in Air humidity in the bedroom.

Durability: A cotton molton topper lasts for many years with normal care and gets softer with every wash. Coated protectors, on the other hand, age visibly: If the film becomes brittle or crinkles louder than before, it is due for replacement. Frequently Asked Questions

Can a musty smell from the mattress go away again?
Usually yes, if the cause is addressed. Stand the mattress on its side against a free wall and thoroughly ventilate the room for several days. If the smell persists after that, the moisture is deep in the core – then only replacement helps, combined with a washable protector for the new mattress.

Does a waterproof protector make the smell worse?
This can happen if it consists entirely of coated plastic and traps the moisture. The sleeping surface is crucial: With a waterproof molton topper (Art. 0809720), breathable cotton lies on top, the membrane is underneath. Anyone who does not need to keep liquids out is better off with pure molton anyway.

Does baking powder or baking soda on the mattress help?
It binds smells superficially for a short time, but does not change the cause. As soon as the next night adds moisture, the smell is back. Powder residues also accumulate in the core. A washable layer between the body and the mattress is more sensible.

Is the fitted sheet not enough as a protector?
No. A sheet is thin and passes moisture to the mattress after a short time. A molton topper is significantly more voluminous, buffers more, and can be washed just as easily – it belongs between the mattress and the sheet, not in its place.

How often should I wash the mattress protector?
As a rule of thumb: every second to third change of bedding. Anyone who sweats heavily, has pets in bed, or has just recovered from a cold washes more frequently. Molton handles this without any problems and does not get thinner in the process.

What exactly is molton?
A densely woven, brushed cotton fabric. The brushing creates volume that absorbs moisture and releases it again. biberna produces molton in its own full-stage production in Germany – the same quality that hangs as stage molton in theaters.
