Linon or percale: Which smooth cotton bedding is right for you?

Linon and Renforcé look almost identical in the online shop: both are smooth, both are made of cotton, both have no noticeable texture. Those choosing between the two for the first time will rarely find the deciding difference in the data sheet – and it is not the material, but the density of the fabric. Depending on whether you prefer to sleep cool and light or robust and uncomplicated, the answer will differ.

What really matters with Linon or Renforcé

Both qualities are plain-woven: the warp and weft threads cross alternately at right angles, without a pattern in the fabric. This is the simplest and at the same time the most tear-resistant weave there is. The difference arises only from how fine the yarns are and how densely they are woven.

Weight and feel. Linon is the lighter of the two fabrics – biberna Linon bedding weighs around 110 g/m². This makes it cool when you get in and comfortable if you get warm quickly at night. Renforcé is woven more densely and therefore feels slightly firmer and more stable, without appearing heavy.

Durability in everyday use. The denser Renforcé weave withstands frequent wash cycles particularly well. For beds that are freshly changed every week – children's rooms, family beds, holiday apartments – this is a real argument.

Price. This is where the most visible difference lies. Renforcé sets start in our range at around €19.95, Linon at around €34.95. This has less to do with quality than with yarn fineness and brand positioning: we offer Renforcé mainly under our entry-level brand Castell, Linon mainly under biberna.

Appearance. Linon looks smoother and calmer due to the finer yarns, Renforcé slightly more matte. You can hardly see the difference in the made bed – you will feel it more.

Which one is right for you?

You get warm quickly at night. Then Linon is the better choice. The lighter fabric traps less heat and feels cooler when you get in. Specifically: the biberna Linon Bedding in White (0046607) – simple, easy to combine and insensitive in the wash.

You change the bed every week. Then Renforcé shows its strength. The Castell Cotton Renforcé Bedding in Storm Grey (0040568) is made for exactly this rhythm: densely woven, colorfast and at a price where a second set for changing does not hurt.

You are furnishing a guest room. Here Linon wins narrowly – because guests have very different temperatures and a light fabric will not be too warm for anyone in doubt. The biberna Linon Bedding in Natural (0046737) looks calm and high-quality, without pushing itself into the foreground.

You want color, but not a high price. Then go for Renforcé: The Castell Cotton Renforcé Bedding in Lemon (0040789) brings color into the bedroom without straining the budget. Those who like it more subdued will find a more upscale version of the same weave with the Daniel Hechter Renforcé Bedding (0041302).

What is often overlooked

Not every Renforcé is pure cotton. In the Renforcé collection, in addition to the cotton sets, you will also find a polycotton variant (for example 0460128). It is even easier to care for and wrinkles less, but absorbs less moisture than pure cotton. If you sweat at night, pay attention to the material specification in the product title.

Ironing determines the look. Both qualities are easy to iron, Linon particularly well in a slightly damp state. Those who do not want to iron at all should hang up the bedding directly after spinning and smooth it out – this is usually completely sufficient for Renforcé.

The size determines the price more than the quality. A set in 155x220 cm costs noticeably more in both qualities than 135x200 cm. Therefore, always compare prices within the same size, otherwise Linon will seem more expensive than it is.

Shipping. We deliver all items within Germany free of charge, without a minimum order value. Two sets for changing therefore cost you no extra.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main difference between Linon and Renforcé?
Both are plain-woven cotton fabrics. Linon is made from finer yarns and woven lighter (approx. 110 g/m²) and therefore feels smoother and cooler. Renforcé is woven more densely, slightly firmer to the touch and particularly robust.

Which quality lasts longer?
In practice, Renforcé is slightly less sensitive to frequent wash cycles due to the higher fabric density. However, Linon is by no means sensitive – plain-woven fabrics are fundamentally tear-resistant and shape-stable.

Which bedding is better if I sweat at night?
Linon, because the lighter fabric traps less heat. Mako Satin is even cooler. Pure cotton is important in both cases – it absorbs moisture without feeling wet.

At what temperature do I wash Linon and Renforcé?
Both qualities generally withstand 60 °C; for white goods, boiling wash is also possible. The deciding factor is always the sewn-in care label of your set.

Why is Linon more expensive than Renforcé?
This is due to the yarn fineness and brand positioning: we offer Renforcé mainly under our entry-level brand Castell, Linon mainly under biberna. Within the same size, the difference is usually €10 to €15.

Can I combine Linon and Renforcé?
Yes. Since both are smooth and plain-woven, they match well visually – for example, a bed cover in Linon with pillowcases in Renforcé. The difference is noticeable above all directly on the skin.

If you are still undecided: Start with the cheaper Renforcé set as everyday bedding and add Linon for the warmer months. We have been working with bedding since 1932 – in 1968 we invented Biber bedding (brushed cotton flannel) – and deliver directly, without intermediaries.
