Bathrobe or dressing gown – what’s the difference?

They both hang on the same hook in the bathroom, both have belts and pockets – and yet many people buy the wrong one. Whether you need a bathrobe or a dressing gown depends not on taste, but on what the garment is intended to do: absorb water or retain warmth. This guide shows you how the two really differ and which option is right for your morning routine.

The difference lies in the purpose, not the cut

A bathrobe is put on while wet. Its purpose is to absorb the water still on the skin after a shower, bath, or sauna. That is why it is made of terry cloth: a fabric with raised loops that has a large surface area and therefore absorbs a lot of moisture. The Daniel Hechter bathrobe and the Hechter Paris bathrobe are both made from 100% cotton – terry cloth absorbs so well precisely because the cotton fibers absorb moisture into their core instead of letting it bead off.

A dressing gown is put on while dry. It goes over pajamas, over the skin after drying off, or in the evening over casual clothes on the sofa. It does not need to absorb anything, but should be lightweight, not feel heavy, and dry quickly again if it does get damp. The Hechter Paris dressing gown is made of microfiber (100% polyester) – soft, significantly lighter than terry cloth, and quick-drying.

In practical terms, this means: If you want to slip into it while wet and dry off in it, you need terry cloth. If you dry off beforehand and want something to slip over afterwards, microfiber is the better choice – a terry cloth gown would simply be too heavy and too warm for this purpose.

Which one is right for you?

You go straight from the shower in the morning – coffee, children, breakfast.
Only one thing matters here: The fabric must absorb the residual moisture so that you are not standing half-wet in the kitchen. Choose the Daniel Hechter bathrobe (Item no. 0100550) made from 100% cotton terry cloth. It is available in sizes S to XL and in silver/grey, navy, and ecru, and can go in the machine at 60°C – important for a garment worn damp every day.

You dry off and want to slip on something lightweight afterwards.
Then a terry cloth gown would be oversized. The Hechter Paris dressing gown (Item no. 0100552) made of microfiber weighs significantly less, does not feel heavy under the arms, and dries quickly again. It is available in sizes S to XL and in silver/grey, pigeon blue, and ecru – the classic choice for anyone who sees the gown more as loungewear than as a towel.

You go to the sauna or are looking for a gift that makes a statement.
For this purpose, the Hechter Paris bathrobe (Item no. 0100551) is the right choice: high-quality terry cloth made from 100% cotton, hood, pockets, and tie belt, in white and navy, from S to XL. White is the classic wellness color and can withstand the 60°C wash that makes sense after sauna sessions.

You have a dressing gown – but drying off isn't working.
This is the most common wrong purchase: microfiber is no substitute for a towel. The solution is not a new gown, but the right addition – the Daniel Hechter terry cloth towels (Item no. 0100660) made from 100% cotton, sewn all around, from the 50x100 cm guest towel to the 70x140 cm bath towel. Dry off first, then slip on.

What is often overlooked

Size is not a clothing size issue. Bathrobes and dressing gowns are deliberately cut generously because they are worn over wet skin or over pajamas. All three models are available from S to XL. If you are between two sizes or want to wear the gown over nightwear, choose the larger one – a gown that is too tight will open when you bend over and retain no warmth.

Washability determines the lifespan. A garment that gets damp every day should be washed hot regularly. All the items listed here are approved for 60°C. For the Hechter Paris bathrobe, the following also applies: do not iron – terry cloth relies on the raised loops, and ironing presses them flat. These loops are precisely the reason for the absorbency.

Terry cloth needs a few washes. New terry cloth only reaches its full absorbency after the first few washes, because production residues are removed from the fibers. So do not be surprised if the gown absorbs a little less than expected the first time.

Microfiber and terry cloth react differently to moisture in the wardrobe. A terry cloth gown that goes into the wardrobe damp will quickly smell musty. Hang it up openly after wearing it. The microfiber dressing gown is less sensitive here because it dries quickly on its own.

Which size is right for a gift is explained by the guide Gifting a bathrobe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a dressing gown like a bathrobe?
To a limited extent. Microfiber absorbs moisture, but nowhere near as much as cotton terry cloth. If you slip into it while wet, residual moisture will remain on your skin. For this purpose, terry cloth is the right quality.

What is the difference between terry cloth and Frottier?
The same fabric with the characteristic loops is meant. "Frottier" is often used in retail for the product group – i.e., towels, bath towels, and bathrobes –, while "terry cloth" is used more for the fabric itself.

Which size should I take?
Go by your usual clothing size and, if in doubt, go up one size. Our models are available in S, M, L, and XL and are deliberately cut generously.

Is a more expensive bathrobe better?
Not necessarily – what matters is whether the quality suits the use. The Daniel Hechter bathrobe for €59.99 is made from the same base material (100% cotton terry cloth) as the Hechter Paris model for €99.99. The difference lies in the fabric quality, finish, and brand line, not in principle.

At what temperature should I wash bathrobes and dressing gowns?
All the models presented here are washable at 60°C. Avoid fabric softener with terry cloth: It coats the loops and reduces precisely the absorbency for which you bought the gown.

What does shipping cost?
Nothing. At biberna, we deliver all products within Germany free of charge – with no minimum order value.

You can find all models in the collections Bathrobes, Hechter Paris, and Daniel Hechter – directly from the manufacturer, without intermediaries.
